In Georgia, two Niners fans taking in Saturday's Niners victory at a Duluth-area Applebee's became victims of some unnecessary violence when a disgruntled Saints fan reportedly took offense to their excitement and opened fire on them in the parking lot. The shooter, identified as 31-year-old Saints fan Donald Ray Ayro, left the restaurant in a hurry after the two friends Corey Adams and Chris Middleton got excited over one of the Niners' exciting touchdown plays. After the 36-32 victory, Ayro apparently ambushed the pair as they left the restaurant, grazing Adams in the back of the head and sending Middleton to the hospital in critical condition.
There's a chance Ayro was hopped up on more than just Skinnybee margarita's and the disappointment of a Saints loss Adams told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that he saw the shooter "pop a pill" at one point. With plenty of witnesses on hand at the suburban strip mall eatery, local police caught up with the suspect a short while later and booked him on two counts of aggravated assault, being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Adams suffered a slight wound, but he told a local TV station that he hoped his friend would pull though.
The Examiner is calling the shooting "the latest of an unfortunate string of sports-related incidents" committed against fans of San Francisco teams, citing last year's unfortunate attack on Giants fan Bryan Stow, but we think this would be a much better argument for keeping Applebee's out of San Francisco city limits. You know where else they have an Applebee's? Santa Clara.

(11,546 posts)and way too personally. God rest him but I remember a time when my step dad was so pissed off because the Niners lost on his birthday. Now instead of enjoying the day AT the game with his step son and step daughter (me), he gets all pissy when things start to go down hill and basically holds a temper tantrum on the way home. I think I was 11 y.o. and he was 53 but I will never forget feeling so embarrassed by him.

(11,546 posts)This is just one of many examples. I still think alcohol and/or other substances with sports events is a bad idea. People do not think clearly and let their primal side take hold of them.

(30,439 posts)the author made it seem like only San Francisco fans are bearing the brunt of despicable sports related violence. Violence happens to fans all over the country and clearly alcohol or other substances play a part many times.

(35,773 posts)Sports may be only an excuse for an individual who is suffering from something, or completely lost, perhaps partly due to the economy. This does not appear to be the typical group-based sports anger, so it seems like an individual who needs help. Unfortunately, two other now need help, too.

(576 posts)spat on at OSU games. Ive seen fist fights at Bengals games.
Its fucking sports people. Your live is not validated by how the team does. Someone who likes a different team is still a human. A human that has a lot in common with you (enjoy the same sport). We dont get executed if our team loses.
Remember the high school rivalry thing? You were told to hate these people because they grew up in a town three miles from you. That meant they were shit.
This is how it is so easy for us to kill in war, be racist, and piss on dead bodies. We see someone who is slightly different as having no value, while our group is the truly righteous sect.
Charge the asshole with attempted murder.

(25,183 posts)It's still a bad idea to wear sports apparel that favors anything but the recognized 'home team' in most places that have really strong feelings about that team. I still like my Seattle Seahawks and Mariners, but I'm not going to wear their team logos in NYC. I might do so at the local sports bar where I'm known by the bartenders, but in five football seasons since I've moved here, I haven't done it.

(8,556 posts)As bad as these incidents are, I think it can get much uglier when you're talking soccer in other parts of the world. From what I understand incidents like this, including enormous brawls involving hundreds, are not uncommon.
