http://blogs.reuters.com/felix-salmon/2012/01/15/atm-charge-of-the-day-holiday-inn-edition/Paul Volcker likes to say that the only worthwhile financial innovation of the past 20 years has been the ATM. So I suppose it was only a matter of time before that, too, was rendered evil.
Here, courtesy of Peter Eavis, is how the ATM at the Holiday Inn in Orlando now works it doesnt just charge $3 per withdrawal, but rather the higher of $3 or 3%.

(25,183 posts)Dragging a little cash out of your own bank, from its own machine. I use a small community bank, and they happen to be closed at 4:30 PM when I get out of work, except for Thursdays. I have to use the machine if I want tip money for when I go out to have a beer. For everything else, I use a credit card, and generally pay the thing off in full each month.

(25,183 posts)A small percentage to show the management, and folding money for the server who keeps my glass filled. I even bought a special bottle of ale available only in downtown Portland, Oregon to give to one of my favorite servers at a beer bar in New Jersey. She was immensely delighted, but the second time I came in there, she remembered my name. It's good that I remembered what she wanted.

(5,756 posts)Imagine, the banks screwing us after we deposit our money in their accounts where they use it to make interest on loans. That's why I use a credit union. Much better service.
