At a wine tasting in Germany we were looking for somebody to celebrate with....
Two Americans approached us to try Italian wines. I asked if they were happy about the election outcome. One guy grimmaced and said nothing. The other guy smiled, giving the impression he was happy, but wouldn't comment out of consideration for his friend. The anti-Obama guy couldn't articulate his feelings though he tried. My friend asked, "You're not one of those people who lives in a bubble, are you?" The guy didn't respond but moved over to the counter serving French wines. It wasn't five minutes after that they were gone.
We stayed three hours more and thoroughly celebrated, hearing Obama's name mentioned by the Germans throughout the night.

Unlike here, in my red state, where celebration is kind of furtive and frantic, the Germans that my daughter and I met several years ago, seemed to be gently amused most of the time, everyone flirted good-naturedly with everyone else, and at the festivals we attended you never saw anyone stupid drunk, although everyone did enjoy the beer or wine a LOT.
I wonder if we could learn anything about trade-policy from Germany, since they are the most successful traders in all of Europe, right? Perhaps some of us should be reading up on this.

. . . but then maybe that's just my blood calling me, because I love Kansas too, though it's not nearly as lush as Germany.
