She hasn't voted for a Dem presidential candidate since Jimmy Carter in 1976, but something they said about Obama last week switched on the light bulb. Her son, who watches Jon Stewart, said she finally realized that Fox News and the repukes actually were Bullshit Mountain. So there is at least some good news down here from red Alabama. Also, most of my nieces and nephews are in their 30s and 40s. Four of the six voted for Obama. All of them, including my oldest sister, voted for Bush in 2000. Now I'm no longer the lonely Democrat at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
That is the only good news I have from deep behind enemy lines. Now back to a cold beer and watching my DVR and reading fun stuff on DU.

(802 posts)state. This election may well represent the death knell of the republican party... and I, for one, won't mourn their passing. I've seen the job market/economy go to crap every time they get in power since Nixon. John Boehner has already started up his stick-in-the-mud protect-the-rich tirade. Oddity is, the republican supporters I know are the worst effected by their policies.
So, keep it up, Republidipshits! Hell, get so damn right wing the Pope will shudder. We'll get the "blue" house we need in 2014 to get this country progressing again.

(21,096 posts)I just learned on my most recent visit home that my elderly Mom (who used to vote GOP always) watches TDS and Colbert whenever she can, bless her heart. But she stopped voting for the GOP back during GWB, decided they were too corrupt and didn't have her vote anymore so she doesn't cancel my Dad's vote anymore.

Those idiots were so convinced that what they were doing was wildly popular.
So much so they printed tickets.

(982 posts)Can we get some more specifics as to exactly what happened, this might help us understand how to deprogram others.

(374 posts)The bubble was so completely detached from reality leading into the election that even the hardcore brainwashed FOX viewers couldn't help but notice when it popped.
Once that happens, once they lose faith in their oracles, they become capable of smelling the BS.

(7,188 posts)What is interesting is that post election, there is an epiphany that Fox's reporting about the election and how Romney and Obama were doing/level of support - that they had it exactly wrong - they were living in a bubble.
So the epiphany was not about the issues - it was about Fox not knowing what was happening in the US, in the battleground states, etc.
I think the epiphany will come in stages - the first has happened - their statements about Romney's support and Obama's support were wrong. Horribly wrong. They looked stupid, ignorant at the core.
The next wave of epiphany may be, hey, Fox tells me Obama is bad. Yet more than 50% of the country voted for him. Why, maybe I need to understand why. It reminds of what Republicans said after the first debate - that Obama's campaign and the DNC spent millions trying to define Mitt, but once Mitt went thru the first debate, people saw him as not crazy, not wacko - and so people said, oh, he is not who the commercials and the Democrats say he is. Perhaps some will actually listen to what Obama says, instead of listening to Sean Hannity tell them what Obama says -- perhaps they will judge for themselves about who Obama is and what he says.
(an aside, my single biggest issue with news today is we don't see the person speaking, we hear a pundit telling us what the person is saying while the person is on screen but their voice is muted)
The third and most important epiphany may or may not come - which is any epiphany on issues. Will people will say, hey, Fox was wrong about who would win the election, their people had wrong information about the polls and the support and the momentum, they said Obama was crazy, and I just heard him speak and he was actually able to put sentences together and spoke of his love of this country, maybe what (fox and the conservative media) is telling me about global warming, the debt, social security, the so called fiscal cliff, is maybe not complete and maybe not accurate? Maybe I should see what others have to say and drum roll.... decide for myself based on information I gather from various sources.

(13,877 posts)new level. I believe that is why the Republicans were so apoplectic about it...it touches nearly everyone at some level or other. Someone's grandmother or in-law or acquaintance at work or down the hall ... it is truly game-changing. They named it derisively and now they are stuck with it as Obamacare. Ha. I believe it can make the difference for 2014 and changing The House.

(7,280 posts)Was a lifelong Republican until 2004 when she voted for Kerry, then Obama in 08 (I am a lifelong Dem voter BTW)
She would never vote for any of these current Republicans and is just as outraged as the rest of us.
She has advanced stage cancer and went out to vote for Obama on Tuesday in spite of the fact that she was afraid she wouldn't be able to stand up for very long at the precinct.
This latest round of chemo has really wiped her out, so she didn't realize she should have requested an absentee ballot instead of having to physically vote.
