Former U.S. Prosecutor Negotiating Plea Deal For Jackson Jr
CHICAGO (CBS) A former U.S. attorney representing embattled Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. is negotiating a plea deal with the federal government, CBS 2 has learned.
<snip>
The plea deal would end Jacksons 17-year career as a congressman representing Chicagos South Side and suburbs.
At the center of negotiations is white-collar criminal defense attorney Dan Webb, who served as Chicagos top federal prosecutor in the 1980s, when several Cook County judges were indicted for public corruption under the Operation Greylord investigation.
The tentative deal includes:
Jackson resigning for health reasons.

(26,366 posts)CHICAGO (CBS) CBS 2 has learned U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. planned to step down weeks ago, ostensibly for mental health reasons, but a legal source said he talked Jackson and his wife, Sandi, out of that decision to resign before the election.
CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports the source a longtime adviser who was involved in those discussions said part of the reason Jackson reconsidered stepping down was the prospect of losing his federal health insurance just when he needed it most.

(12,296 posts)I'm new to the whole story (aside from the 'mental health absence' part of it) so I totally don't understand what he's involved in & why he's copping a plea, and while I certainly understand 'staying at your job in order to keep your insurance', did it not once cross his mind about all of the constituents he'd be screwing by not being able to serve them, or ultimately stepping down & risking the seat?
