.... during an illegal war.

Many of us had serious problems with being in the service during a war we had come to detest during our time of service.
Some of us protested the war (this was a legal activity).
Some of us spent time in jail (not so very legally) for doing so.
I did both.
I also did my job, followed orders, was promoted several times, was invited to re-enlist and discharged honorably.
I went to college after discharge and told few people about where I had been.

I have never been at peace with my service and do not ask for thanks.

In a war like Viet Nam , honor is due those who followed their conscience and supported the war or objected to it.

I did both and survived but I claim no honor for it.

For everyone else...you need this pic of our shoulder patch to understand the references to color

THE BALLAD OF THE ASA
Anonymous – Many sources
To the tune of 'The Ballad of the Green Berets",
By SSgt Barry Sadler

Black is for the night we fear
Blue’s for water-- we don't go near
White is for the flag we fly
Yellow is the reason why.

Red is for the blood we shed
As you see, there is no red
'T**less WACs', that's what they say
about the men of the ASA.

Fighting soldiers jump and die
But we're the ones who sit and cry
One hundred men will jump today
but not a one from the ASA.

Drunken soldiers, always high
Dropouts from old Sigma Chi
Men who bullshit all the way
We're the men of the ASA.

We're not trained to fight or kill
But we'll always drink our fill
Men who drink can seldom fight
And ASA drinks day and night!

Trained to go from bar to bar
That's a war that's best by far
"Another round," someone insists,
"we give a shit for dahs and dits."

On a mid, a trick chief waits
For his men who’re always late
Men who drink among the best
'Another round', their last request.

Headphones humming in our ears
We've been cleared, so we're not q****s
One hundred men will test today
But only one makes the ASA.

A teal blue scarf 'round my son's neck
Would make my son a nervous wreck
One hundred men re-upped today
But not a one for the ASA.

My brother, father, and grandfather also served (Navy, Army, Army respectively).

I'm sorry my son is missing all the fun (he's a progressive).

My Army nephew was part of Shock & Awe, and there is a navy nuclear engineer in my family.

I am a Veteran, so were both of my husbands, several of my brothers, and many others in my family.

There is a Marine in my family who has had 3 tours in Afghanistan. He's home now, thank goodness!

Peace! to all!

My husband is a 21 yr. Army veteran having served in Desert Storm and Haiti. My Dad and Uncles all served in WWII. All are true patriots and I'm very proud of their service and hate when repubs start talking about their monopoly on patriotsim. When they go off on a rant about us terrible Liberals I tell them about my Husband's service to his country and ask them to please tell him what they think of us Dem's. That shuts them the hell up everytime!

European theater. Was an Italian immigrant, joined in '42 but didn't become a naturalized citizen until 1945 while in Germany which always fascinated me (I even know the town in Germany since its on his citizenship certificate). Also, had a great Uncle who served in the war, also i believe in Europe.

To the Veterans.

During World War II, my father was in the Army and my mother was in the SPARS (the United States Coast Guard Women's Reserve).

Now that it's too late, I wish that I had asked them to tell me more about their service. Alas, I know very little about their experiences during the war.

Promoted from secretary to copywriter in 1982. Wrote print ads, a TV spot, and radio commercials (one of which won an award). Visited Forts Lewis and Benning, but, oddly, not USAREC headquarters in Ft. Sheridan.
