What will Republicans learn from the 2012 election?

This may be the most consequential question in American politics of the weeks and months ahead. Will the GOP blame Mitt Romney for being an inept candidate? Will they point to his campaign's tactical blunders, or his ideological positioning? Will Republicans begin to confront the rhetoric and positions that have alienated women and minorities? Will they moderate on economic issues or seek a more conciliatory tone overall? Will the party base and its elites be in agreement on the way forward, or will they clash?
This conversation among GOP activists, thinkers, officeholders and consultants is only beginning. An email I received from one smart party strategist offers a thoughtful template for the coming debate:

Get ready for a bunch of party infighting over whether the loss can be attributed to Romney's being too conservative or not conservative enough, and the broader fight about whether in 2016, Republicans should nominate a conservative or a more centrist candidate. There will be a lot of time and attention spent on that debate, probably for months more, and it will completely miss out some of the major reasons Romney lost that have little or nothing to do with ideology, and which the GOP does itself a real disservice by glossing over.

go. Both of them were very attractive if I do say so myself.... but that isn't going to make the telly tarry on that station for more than a minute or so.

Their reaction to losing Latinos 73%-23% or whatever it was is Romneyesque "ok, we need to flip-flop on immigration so we can get the Spics to vote for us!!!"

I've yet to hear one major Republican express concern about getting the black vote that they lost about 95%-5%.

Immigration is an "American" problem that just happens to contain a bunch of Latinos.
Food stamps or poverty is an "American" problem that doesn't just include blacks. And the reason a bunch of blacks are in poverty/unemployed very likely has something to do with the racism they're still up against.
etc

The racism in this GOP party continues to disgust and sicken me. They don't get it because they're still filled with prejudice and hate.

I hope people like that are buried in US elections for a long, long time until the racists among them croak.

And for the record, I'm a snow white WASP.

Sorry if I offended anyone. The headline upset me.

Keep posting, cleduc. You zeroed in on just what the repugs are all about. They'll try to wine and dine the more alluent Latinos but the hell with the those that are still trying to make it. As far as African Americans, they still won't go after the well off ones because they won't be able to use the "N" word as much. Besides, they probably think something might rub off on them, even though many of them could use a little color.

I don't know why but whenever I hear a discussion of getting some Hispanics in the Republican votes, I picture a return of slavery indenture and each Hispanic is 3/5 of a vote to his/her "job creator". It seems to be more of a counting thing than of a policy thing.

Sorry but I don't see any consideration of Hispanic priorities.
