TO DUer's IN NEED OF OUR HELP POST-SANDY

Last edited Mon Nov 12, 2012, 12:13 AM - Edit history (1)

(I was previously given permission by Skinner to post periodically about http://www.wishadoo.org, especially when it involves DUers, with this required disclaimer: "The administrators of Democratic Underground have given permission for one discussion thread on this topic. The administrators of Democratic Underground make no claims regarding the legitimacy or illegitimacy of this fundraising effort. Permission was granted by Skinner on 8/6/2010, and the moderators have been notified.&quot

I've asked the admins if they'll please make this post a sticky, so it stays visible. Maybe you can chime in to let them know it would help a lot of they'd make this thread a sticky. Here's a LINK TO THE META POST.

MANY DUer's and their loved ones have been impacted by Hurricane Sandy. If you are such a DUer, or if you are in touch with a DUer and feel comfortable doing so on their behalf, I invite you to please CREATE A WISHLIST POST at Wishadoo!

If you haven't yet joined Wishadoo!, it's easy; let me know if you have trouble (check spam folder if you don't get the verification email right away; or write me here). Just be sure to indicate you learned about Wishadoo! from DU, and I'll know such Wishlist posts should be shared here. Edit to add: Please select the "crisis" category and put Sandy in the subject line!

As has been done in the past, when a DUer creates a Wishlist post, I then have permission to post here, so the rest of the community can be of assistance.

Once you've created such a Wishlist post, DUers who want to help can contact you via PM here at DU, or via Wishadoo! If you have a PayPal account, monies can be received quickly, especially if a PayPal debit card is being used!

(The most straightforward way to send money without facing a PayPal fee is to send money as a “Personal” payment, making sure to select “Other” as the reason for payment.)

I can keep updating this thread as we go. No Sandy-related Wishlist posts have been created as yet (5:45 PM EST, Sunday 11/11). This is an invitation to do so, since many have been unsure how we can help DUers affected by Sandy.

Special thanks to DonRedwood and Freshwest for encouraging action on this!

I think this is the best way. If you have other suggestions, please let me know!

BTW, here's a link to a pre-election recent thread here at DU, listing several Wishlist posts by DUers. You can follow up with them here or at Wishadoo; I need to follow up with them as well to get a status update.

Because there have been threads here talking about how we cannot donate slightly used items or furniture, electronics, etc... right? All the relief orgs can mobilize with is cash...and we have more to offer than that too!

I will share this on my FB /twitter too...

I have a LOT of clothes, kids stuff, etc...I guess I would just have to figure out the shipping cost, see if i can get a bulk rate.

but I would imagine cash is what is most desperately needed.

That said, when dealing one-on-one this way (via the Wishlist posts), people can be specific as to what they need and perhaps others will have it and be able to send, beyond cash.

Since it's the "CEO" of Wishadoo that we work with here, I can't help but be a bit biased toward her over the Red Cross.

Wishadoo! really isn't even involved with transactions.

The idea with Wishadoo! is to eliminate the middleman altogether, so the assistance goes directly to the person in need, not through or to Wishadoo. It's one-on-one as much as possible, with Wishadoo! simply providing the space to connect. I've always referred to the Wishlist as a "craigslist of compassion."

But thank you so much! I appreciate your kind words.

I know this probably isn't a popular point of view, but the Red Cross, IMO, hovers between useless and criminally incompetent. I tried to volunteer as a nurse with them a number of times and just gave up, it was so disorganized. I like your grassroots group and would not hesitate to pony up for your group and actual names and faces.
