Why would Petraeus pick an unknown to write his biography?

On CNN's Candy Crowley show today, the journalists spoke about how Petraeus cultivated the DC media - he would call them on background to chat (from Afghanistan) and he would always take their calls. Here is a guy with extraordinary relationships with the media, who could have Brokaw or Woodward or anyone he wanted to write his biography with him -- yet he allows an unpublished author the job.

Strange, very strange....

Maybe he offered her the job because he was already having the affair and the job was good cover.

She is very attractive.
I don't think he was having an affair when he picked her to write his biography, but he could very well have wanted to keep her around.

You get the idea. Who cares? The guy was CIA director and he stuck his wood in the wrong oven.

She was doing a dissertation on his leadership style for a PhD and decided to make it a full book when he was sent to run the Afghanistan war. It was already well underway when he agreed to make it a biography instead.

Why pick someone with a record one way or another?

West Point grad working on an ivy doctorate... sounds like a good bet.

write it. She was a PhD candidate doing her doctoral dissertation on him. The book was an expansion of her dissertation (quite a standard happening-- publish or perish, you know!)

Also, people generally have say in who writes or helps them to write an AUTObiography, not a biography. That said, she did have amazing access. When he started having amazing access to HER is the question.
