As the founder of the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers, Mrs. Carter often noted that there are only four kinds of people in this world: those who have been caregivers, those who are currently caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who will need caregivers.............................
-Caregivers are one of our greatest resources.

(37,150 posts)Wonderful thought all should take to heart at an early age.
Meanwhile conservatives, ensconced in their values, dont have anytime in their lives to care about anybody or anything unless there is something in it for them. That would make them the fifth kind. The conservative kind.

(206,676 posts)Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter has been diagnosed with dementia. That news comes about three months after it was announced her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, was moving into hospice care. Caregiving has been a major focus of Mrs. Carters life and work. William Brangham looks at that legacy and the impact dementia has on millions of families. - Aired on 05/30/2023.

(206,676 posts)And they both have led remarkable lives. I have Jimmy Carter's autobiography, "A Full Life: Reflections at 90" - he was the very first candidate that I really admired and supported, but after I listened to his recollections about his incredible life of service (I have it on audio, read by the author!), I admired him even more!

I will check out his book. Thanks.

(206,676 posts)And since he wrote it at 90(!), it chronicles his life - and history - through the Obama administration. He talks about his early life in rural Georgia, his life at Annapolis and his brilliant career in the Navy. And he did seriously trouble Navy leaders when he suddenly resigned to return to Georgia to run the family business after his father died - not to mention getting the silent treatment from Rosalynn!
He talks about his first run for public office and the blatant cheating he encountered and took on! And then there were his years in the governor's office - as I said, I have it on audio and I don't think he got to his run for president until disc #5! And he provides details about his time as president, including the Camp David Accords and his friendship with his former opponent, Gerald Ford. Truly a life well lived!

(16,429 posts)You may be right, she they may follow each other to their deaths and that would be quite the love story. History will be kind to them as they both gave so much for humanity.. not just here put in other places in the world. They picked up a hammer and showed us how its done. We will treasure them while theyre still with us. 🫶

(621 posts)I recently posted a poem about being a care giver to my mom, who suffers from dementia. Though it is about her struggles, it is also about the pain of being a caregiver to someone who you love. I thought there must be caregivers here on this forum and maybe I was able to put words to some of the emotions that we both witness and experience. I would be honored if caregivers on DU would give it a read. And I hope, in some way, that it helps. ❤️

(84,031 posts)Beautiful. So moving and it made me cry.
I really think this should be posted in general discussion so more people may read it. If you are concerned it does not belong there then add this link at the bottom of your OP.
More than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer's. By 2050, this number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million.
1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer's or another dementia. It kills more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined.
In 2023, Alzheimers and other dementias will cost the nation $345 billion. By 2050, these costs could rise to nearly $1 trillion

Thank you for sharing your poem.

(621 posts)I will. I write about whatever is on my mind in any given moment. Many are about social issues and current events but I post in the poetry forum. Not much readership over there, but some truly worthy pieces by the greats and original, new writers.
