As a result of Tuesday's election, Americans in 15 states have filed petitions to secede from the United States, Regina Conley reported at Red Alert Politics on Saturday.
So far, she says, residents in Louisiana, Texas, Kentucky, Colorado, New Jersey and ten other states, have filed petitions at the White House petition site requesting secession. A petition for New York to secede was file by "C R" of Grand Forks, North Dakota on Saturday.
Examiner's Sheila Carroll says those other states include Montana, North Dakota, Indiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Oregon.
On November 7, the day after the election, "Michael E" from Slidell, Louisiana, filed a petition at the White House "We the People" site, requesting that Louisiana be allowed to secede.

(328 posts)Yes, there may be 25,000 crackpots in some of these states, but, really they are outnumbered by saner citizens. Could we just ignore the crackpots? I checked the Louisiana petition to see if there was some way to object to it (no way that I saw), but quite a few of the signatures were not even from Louisiana residents.
I am unhappy to see that these silly petitions are bringing out so much negative comment about all the residents of these states.

(18,318 posts)These threads are filled with anti-Southern and regional animosity, and blatant cultural stereotypes. Don't worry, I know my geograpphy.
BTW, being an old white guy from the South (a Cracker, no less), hardly a week goes by when someone says or implies that I am a racist -- sometimes by just showing up. And I'm from a foreign country: Florida.

(8,275 posts)Should such a petition be successful, what would happen to the Federal dollars to that state, would the people be immediately cut off?

(11,495 posts)I am willing to bet that these people are the same idiots that listen to Glen Beck, Limbaugh, fox news, and the other talking heads the spew hate daily. So why don't find some place to put them all, including the talking heads that have brainwashed them, someplace far away from the rest of humanity, someplace where they can "survive" on their own, no help from any "government", and let those talking heads that they love so much run things!
My suggestion would be some island out in the middle of nowhere! Lets see just how long they survive with no help from the outside world!

(33,956 posts)The troops and the equipment belong to the United States and the investment into these trained soldiers is extensive.
They want an army? Let them figure it out. They can't have ours.
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-happens-when-a-military-base-is-decommissioned.htm
When a base is decommissioned, a very specific process is followed. First personnel and equipment are removed from the base so that an assessment of the area can be made, with a focus on areas of potential environmental hazard. Due to extensive mishandling of a wide variety of toxic substances, most military bases are heavily contaminated and require years of environmental cleanup before they can be developed or turned over to another agency

(3,596 posts)This has been tried before and was a colossal failure. Colorado is turning bluer with each election cycle. New York is bluer than the ocean.
So I wonder how it would work for these states to secede. What would their economies look like? What kind of diplomatic relations would they have with the U.S. They do realize we will come and remove anything that is ours or that we built. So let's see in Louisiana we will dismantle the levees that protect N.O. We will remove all military and other government infrastructure. Any government buildings, parts of the U.S. highway system including the Interstate system would have to be bombed or otherwise destroyed. I guess we could give them a pricetag and let them keep all of that except for anything military. We would remove our military presence including any personnel, aircraft, etc. and bring them back to the U.S.
Geographically you could have some "regional" associations such as Indiana/Kentucy or Montana/North Dakota, Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and Georgia and N.C. where they share some geographic border(s).
But a state like Oregon would be surrounded by the U.S. And how would interior states/associations like N.D./Montana or Indiana/Kentucky get raw materials or get their goods to market? The U.S. would charge them more than the products are worth.
Oh and further there would be no telephone service, no roads into our out of these new countries, no diplomatic relations. We would treat them like Cuba so no travel, no mail, no economic exchange with the rest of the U.S.
I see this going very badly for them but hey, give it a go. Let's see how that works out for you.

Edited to add: They will only do job #3 if they can be assured they won't be in harm's way, and the odds are tremendously in their favor.

(1 post)Considering that most of the southern states in this group are red states, and that statistically, they collect more taxpayer money in the form of food stamps and other financial assistance from the Federal Government...than most of their northern or midwestern tier neighbors...
I would like to see any of these states survive on their own without the rest of the country.
If they are that ignorant... and racist... to believe that it would be better to cut themselves off from the rest of America, than it would be to perhaps, take a step back and look at the facts instead of Fox News... and maybe realize they've all been duped into voting against their own best interests...
Then, I say.. good riddance to the lot of you. Form your own theocracy, abolish the minimum wage and public education, and elect your own government officials who will rob you blind and make you believe they are doing you a favor, or that you are "one of them." With the little money you have left, you can go out and buy yourselves some health insurance on the open market.
After that experience, feel free to share with us how great "capitalism" is when it comes to your own survival.
If you need a handout, please don't call us. After all, your idea of government is much better than anything the United States government - and Barack Obama - have to offer.

(5,519 posts)SEDITION
In law, sedition is overt conduct, such as speech and organization, that is deemed by the legal authority to tend toward insurrection against the established order. Sedition often includes subversion of a constitution and incitement of discontent (or resistance) to lawful authority. Sedition may include any commotion, though not aimed at direct and open violence against the laws. Seditious words in writing are seditious libel. A seditionist is one who engages in or promotes the interests of sedition.
Not to be confused with sedation.

The White House actually has set up a section for their "We the People" petitions. If they want a response, they have to have 25,000 signatures.
They hate "big government" but they are supplying their names and addresses on petitions for secession? Idiots.

(478 posts)One proviso. Once a state opts out, any citizens that were opted out because they were part of that state can never rejoin the federal programs.
Let them opt out using a state referendum.
It will be a good experiment.
Either they will like the result or those who feel as they do who were lucky enough to live in the other states will learn to stop complaining.

Look, many people can't move or don't want to move because of family/friends/job, etc.
I want my healthcare, social security, medicare, medicaid, etc.
How about we petition wealthy liberals to purchase radio and television stations in the South and mid-West so that the people in these states hear something other than right-wing, hate radio?

(478 posts)I live in Minnesota, very close to Fargo, North Dakota.
On the one hand, North Dakota did elect a number of Democrats this time around, for which I am grateful.
On the other hand, I get a lot of flack from...shall I say...some very conservative, Bible waving, hate-filled people...I'm trying to be kind.
There are times I want to tell them when they start going on...fine...go do your own thing.
I may not be in a red state, but I am inundated by red state propaganda.
How do you handle it being a blue person living in a red state?
Would you rather have individuals be able to opt out of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid (I think Medicaid is state-run so it may be harder to manage), health care than have an entire state opt out?
