you mom's will especially like this one
Last Friday (11/2/12) President Obama was speaking at our local high school. I took my 10wk old son with me. I did pack some formula in the bag as I knew the place would be packed and was unsure about breastfeeding in front of thousands. My son is an eater and seeing as we were there about 4hrs he had no problem devouring the 8oz I packed. So there I was front row with a hungry baby. I knew I didn't want him to start crying, as the President had just begun to speak, so I covered him up with his blanket and let him go to town. I noticed the President glance at me while speaking and give a little smile. I thought surely I imagined it. Then, when he was done speaking he came down to do the usual crowd greeting, shaking hands and whatnot. As soon as he got close enough, he pointed to me and gestured his hands in the "hand me the baby" manner. So I handed my son over! He danced with him a second and kissed him on his forehead. As he was handing him back he smiled, nodded at me, and said good job. Everyone has been asking why he told me good job and I just giggle. Here I was worried about breastfeeding in front of all those people and the only person who noticed was The President of the United States, and he supports it! Best feeling EVER!

How could he when Mitt tripped his mom to win a family foot race, shoved his dad's face in butter, shoved his brother's face in whipped cream, and always insists on taking cuts in the family dinner line? I'll bet deep down they despise him--sounds like a tyrant.

There's almost no daylight between his 'family values' and mine. He's SO much more about love than hate ... so much more about respect than condescension ... no wonder the Reich Wing hates him. He's like sunlight to those vampires.

I could tell they were all kinda bummed by Pres. Obama's big win, too.) I hate to think what would've happened to us all, long-term, if Meat Robot Mitt had won.
Can you imagine what he's going to be like as a grandfather? Since he obviously loves kids so much, he'll probably be over the moon the whole time!

(671 posts)but that made me tear up! No reason for any woman to be ashamed of breatfeeding in public, but to have the president acknowledge it, I don't have words!
2naSalit
(86,647 posts)it shows his humanity in ways few of his opponents ever could. Mittens would have had Ann get all embarrassed (if she was there) and then call the SS to have her removed as if a rude heckler. In Utah, they had court battles and horrible public embarrassments of moms breastfeeding at malls and other public places, tucked away in a secluded corner. in one incident the poor mom was quietly attending her child and a female mall security guard went up to her, whipped the blanket off the child and started yelling at her and charged her with profanity or some foolishness. I don't think mittens would have handled it well at all either.
Now the president has two lovely children and a lovely wife, all of whom understand life in a realistic manner. I bet he has rarely had a child scream while he was holding them or continue to do so once he held them for a moment.
He is a real man who understands that children aren't just a happenstance article that accompanies the female faction, he realizes that men play a role in the lives of children, even new ones. And he had no misgivings about doing that, he sure made that mom who was feeling awkward, feel much better about doing what she needed to do. That was just plain sweet.
Hearing these stories about the president makes my heart swell with pride!
Welcome to DU!

(7,887 posts)DEM men make better Fathers and Husbands because they let their kids and wives and other people be who they are and do what they do best without making a huge F***ing deal about it.
The world is a lot less uptight because men are evolving into understanding women just a tiny bit. Lord knows we still can't figure ourselves out fully. But like a lot of DEM men Obama is comfortable with the complexities of life and enjoys the sweet moments of connection with others that happens when you aren't busy being judgemental and confrontational about every little thing.

(65,408 posts)here on DU, a lot of the people who respond to the post automatically assume the stuff was written by the DUer who has quoted it from elsewhere, so they respond to the DUer as though it is about him or her rather than the original writer?
You'd think after a dozen or so of those things people would start to understand that these items are quotes of material from other places, not original pieces by the OP.
I understand when the OP doesn't bother to make the fact clear, but trailmonkee made it clear enough that he/she found the item on Facebook and was quoting it here--yet half the posters assume that trailmonkee is the woman in the story with the breastfeeding baby.
trailmonkee
(2,681 posts)(I am a guy by the way)
tblue37
(65,408 posts)quite clear in the OP that you were quoting what someone else wrote on Facebook.
I guess it wouldn't get to me so much, except it happens over and over and over again--and it never seems to sink in that an OP is not necessarily posting his/her own story, or that when he/she specifically says he/she found it somewhere else, that's a sign that it probably is not his/her own story.
I also think it wouldn't get to me so much except that I teach college English, and by this point in the semester, I am getting a bit frustrated by the careless reading habits of my students. I put instructions into writing and make them available online, and I do everything possible to make sure that the instructions are clear and easy to follow--but half of my students still get the most basic things wrong.
I want to bang my head on the desk sometimes.

(3,370 posts)Big time breastfeeding activist and breastfeeding counselor here...
The Obama administration is incredibly breastfeeding friendly. By the way, this fact has been attacked often by right wingers. Anyway, Michelle has spoken about breastfeeding her daughter(s). She has talked about how she feels it's an important step in reducing childhood obesity. I believe she has made statements about wanting to see breastfeeding rates increase in the African American community (where it's lower than other communities). Michelle is very supportive of the "Baby Friendly Hospital" initiative, which has the goal of higher success rates when it comes to breastfeeding right after birth.
There is a child nutrition bill that Obama signed that provides WIC with more resources to encourage and support breastfeeding (they have counselors and they also rent out breast pumps). Increasing breastfeeding rates among WIC recipients actually lessens the tax burden on the public (they spent about $850 million for formula in 2010).
Under Obama, the IRS now provides deductions for breast pumps. Again, this is something the right wing attacked.
ObamaCareS has language stating that employers must give moms time an space to pump during the workday. ObamaCareS also covers breastfeeding counseling and supplies.
So, it's a VERY breastfeeding friendly administration and that's a GOOD thing.
And he always looks so damn natural with babies.
