I posted this on my FB account. These are my words and feeling as clumsy as they may be.
This is a day late:
I have heard a lot of talk about seceding from the United States lately. Ironically, much of it comes from the same people who thanked me for my service this past Veterans Day. I would like to make some things clear. I am not a huge fan of what our military has to do at the behest of our government, but I did serve. I served not for the powers that be nor for what could be gained. I served because of the concept of the United States, the concept that when all we have and all we are have been united we can pull through any adversity. This concept is what empowers not me, not you, but us.
I would like the figurative you out there to consider something. What will happen when you are no longer a part of us? There are all manner of things that will have to be put into place once you become sovereign nations. Who will help you when you need it? How will you be affected? Your businesses? Your infrastructure? There is a reason we can live the way we do and help as often as we do. It's because we are The United States of America. Even if you leave we will still be The United States of America, and if you fail we will take you back, and we will still be The United States of America.
Now, I'd like you to consider how the people who served this nation to preserve the concept and it's people must feel when you say you no longer wish to be a part of it just because you aren't getting what you want. When you tell me "thanks for your service," and then talk of secession, you can take your "thanks" and stick it up your ass. To me you are a hypocrite and a borderline traitor. You have no clue what this nation stands for.

(6,785 posts)The social conservatives would probably be quite happy in Saudi Arabia or Iran, the fiscal conservatives would be tickled pink to live in Dubai, and the libertarian wing would find Somalia more to their liking.

I served six years in the US Navy, because it was the right thing to do.
Finished my degree in physics. Got married, raised a family and retired.
As I look back on my life those years in the service were wonderful. They rounded out my life experiences, opened my mind to other points of view and yes, I did see the world!
To those people, mostly in the Red States, that want to secede, don't like the door hit you in your ass as you're leaving!

(22,671 posts)What you just said is near perfect to what I was trying to wrap my head around today, while trying to think of reasons why I would want to sign a petition to secede from our union.
Putting myself in their shoes; where to even begin and why would I even be thinking of such a treasonous idea? You have to really think it through. Would you be willing to take up arms to get your way, another civil war, killing your fellow man, KILLING YOUR FELLOW MAN??? Because of one election? You think that 2010 wasn't any more humbling for the Dems? It's called an election for a reason. We the people, election our representatives. They represent us and speak for us.
As much as I disagree with all the red Republican friends, neighbors and colleagues, it disgusts me to think of bearing arms, them against us, crosshairs in a gunsight. SICK! The people in these red states either haven't thought it through or they are truly mental.
We need to push for federal education standards with at least one critical thinking course as a mandatory part of the curriculum.
