I realized the day of the house explosion in Indianapolis that there was no quick method of finding easily accessible information on oil/gas well sites or fracking sites. Of course, it now seems the earthquake was caused by a gas explosion in the house but my first thought was there any fracking going on in the area.

A DUer found a map from Kentucky University's Geological Survey website and honestly I was completely shocked at how many wells were dotted across the Kentucky/Ohio area. I don't even know if average citizens in that area know how many there were/are.

It seems it would be even more difficult for the average person to get information of proposed drilling sites when the previously/current wells are already in existence aren't easily accessible.

Not sure if the entire gas/oil industry purposely keeps the information difficult to find or if the States have dropped the ball with informing the public - negligently or deliberately, it needs to change.

I'd also think having local media could be of service and involved in informing the local public of what is being purposed in their backyards; that is if media was actually concerned on reporting news that could affect a community or wreck the environment of something like a national forest or wildlife reserve.

Sorry for rambling, it's just I find it disturbing that all this drilling seems to sleaze under the public's radar.

Which is why I shared the link. Might be worth checking one a week to make folks aware of these things.

But you know there are those who really don't want people to be informed - I know you do and seems as a nation, people don't actually want to know unless it's in their own backyard. Sad.

I also learned that fracking isn't as well regulated as most people think. I read somewhere that the companies doing the fracking aren't even required to list the actual chemical brew they use in fracking mixes! Then there's the fact that a PA EPA neglected to notify anyone (incuding the homeowner) that lab tests found toxic chemicals were found in wellwater near a fracking site.

It's a nightmare but all public seems to be hearing is Drill Baby Drill and the media is silent.

Wonder why that is?

I guess all an individual can do is try to get more people concerned.

And the government has a ton of web pages out there like this for comments on regulations....and you never see them spend 5 minutes to help people use their own voice...until after something is done.
