You or i can be in fight with sister/brother/spouse and mad as hell. However if an outsider comes after your sister/brother/spouse, you will go to any length to support them. Think about that for a moment.

(24,437 posts)I thought that his support among Republicans was *decreasing* and that a majority of Republicans (or people?) supported the indictments?

(1,306 posts)That only goes so far... once the "outsider" proves the allegations are accurate, those protectors usually turn into the most vicious detractors.
Plus, it's not "outsiders" bringing charges against him, it's mostly repubs.
The problem is these people are low-information citizens who think they know it all because they heard at work, from a friend, over the fence, saw it on FOX.

(94,721 posts)...is that 1) he's not actually growing support (it's been pretty static); the MARGIN of his support has increased because the support for DeSantis has dropped. Second, this is with respect to the Primary. Your analogy would argue that Trump is "family" and the other Republicans are not.

(7,871 posts)As Republicans actually grow tired of Trump's shit, they realize that Trump = Republican Party right now and most of them will leave the party, at least temporarily. As Republicans that are truly anti-Trump leave the party, that means the concentration of pro-Trump people in the Republican Party increases, which means his support increases on a percentage basis, but not on an overall numbers basis.
This is why you see almost 60% of voters approve of his being prosecuted even as more Republicans support him. The people that are truly anti-Trump are not Republicans (Democrats, Independents, ex-Republicans) and are increasing in number while Republicans (i.e., the party of Trump right now) are dwindling, but the truly anti-Trumpers are leaving the party so of course support within in the party (on a percentage basis) will increase as only those that support him or will vote for him are left behind in it.

(32,087 posts)and all that's left are Trumpsters, it's easy to mistake things as an increase in support. Not to mention a very lazy interpretation of the numbers.

(7,025 posts)But another consideration is that GOP voters have not changed since trump. They voted for him in 2016 and by increased numbers in 2020. What's changed is the number of GOP voters that think trump is a viable candidate. They aren't becoming Democrats in any significant percentage. The tendancy towards bigotry, misogyny, racism... is baked in. They will not come to an epiphany over civil rights, environment, education, health so as to sign on to the Democratic platform.
They just don't want to be associated with a loser. They have no problem with him otherwise. AND the representives they elected are defending him in public everyday, doing what they can to undermine any accountability for his actions.
GOP voters have headed for the forested hills. They are still GOP voters.

(25,577 posts)Opportunistic jerkoff par excellence. He was a teabagger when they were emerging, he was a Jr Bush guy until all the BS with Cheney started to really come out, he moderated his views during Obama because he couldnt argue with his intellect or competence and was popular among CNN viewers, and he sufficiently fed Trumps ego but was ready to bolt at any instant if the walls began to cave in. Wind is blowing THIS way today, Mike.

(59,504 posts)The goal of some Republican powers that be was that De Santis would become that viable alternative. I suspect that the reason he was number two and at one point even looked like a potential threat is that many who wanted an alternative selected him knowing very little about him as a person. However, to know him is NOT to like him - so the more visibility he was given, his numbers imploded to a point, where several people could become number 2. Unfortunately for the Republicans, some of his support went to Trump rather than undecided or another candidate.
If Trump becomes the nominee, it may be that one reason is that people like the Koch brothers backed the wrong horse - a very lame one. Had DeSantis' numbers improved as he campaigned and became equal of higher than Trump's AND had he polled better against Biden than Trump, it is entirely possible that Trump, not DeSantis, would have imploded. Both of those things would have needed a better politician/person than DeSantis could even be taught to be. It is hard to be that those powers that be could not have found a better ultra conservative politician, who could be billed as MAGA politics without that baggage and corruption.
