Scary

Here’s a Scary Metric

According to The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), October 2012 was the 332nd consecutive month of above-average temperatures.

The average temperature across land and ocean surfaces during October was 14.63°C (58.23°F). This is 0.63°C (1.13°F) above the 20th century average and ties with 2008 as the fifth warmest October on record. The record warmest October occurred in 2003 and the record coldest October occurred in 1912. This is the 332nd consecutive month with an above-average temperature.

Or as Grist put it:

If you were born in or after April 1985, if you are right now 27 years old or younger, you have never lived through a month that was colder than average. That’s beyond astonishing.

Astonishing is one way to put it. “Frightening” would be another.

I would also point out that last year House Republicans voted for significant cuts to NOAA’s budget. And the budget that included said cuts was drafted by none other than Paul Ryan.

I truely appriciate you linking this story, and yes; my moniker is certainly indicitive of my love of the environment Mother Earth.

Yes, global warming and climate change is scary. However, I believe that a lot of people are still in denial, even after Hurricane Sandy; and the public officials who afterwards have come forward with a newfound understanding on how climate change may have had a contributing factor. Everyone eventually has their awakening. Hopefully, we're not too late, however many fear we are well beyond a point of return...

Right now, hydraulic hydrofracturing in NYS (my home state, Finger Lakes region) is my hot button issue to which I devote a majority of my time.

Welcome (belated) to DU!

The issue of climate change is the worst threat to mankind ever! So very many just put blinders on.They don't wish to see.
The first biggest mistake was when Gore called it Global Warming....bad moniker. It allowed the crazies.. ie Hannity and the rest to mock it on Faux news.Saying Global warming???? It's snowing!

We have corporations and people trying to buy our elections ( Koch et all) so that they can can continue to pollute unregulated. To make obscene profits.
We all need to change this. If we do not it will be the end of our civilization as we know it.

is jaw dropping unless one was testing the hypothesis that there is global warming.

Nature will find her way regardless.

Humans have fouled their own nest.

An interesting thought experiment is how much and how expressed the time of humanity will show in the geologic record millions of years from now.

As a kid I always said she was a bad omen of things to come. Some days I still feel that way.
