Menendez (D-NJ) Drops His Opposition to Obama’s Pick for a Federal Appeals Court

Reversing himself in what had become an awkward intraparty stalemate for Democrats, Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey said Friday that he would no longer block President Obama’s nominee to a federal appeals court.

Mr. Menendez said he had decided to support the nominee, Magistrate Judge Patty Shwartz, after an “in-depth discussion” with her at a meeting on Friday.

He had angered the White House with his refusal to support her since her nomination in October to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit — the first time a senator from Mr. Obama’s party had blocked one of his judicial nominees.
