A proposal on filibusters

To say that sports metaphors are overused in discussing and reporting on politics is akin to saying that water is overused in the ocean. Even otherwise insightful and intelligible commentators and pundits can hardly make it through a discussion of politics with succumbing to the sports metaphor.

This is not intended to be a rant on that subject, though it is mightily called for. I make the point only to express my amazement that one particular sports analogy has not been employed to tame the filibuster.

I suggest that each side get a certain number of fillibusters or holds to use during a session - sort of like time outs in football. Maybe even allot them by time period. These could only be called by the [strike through]coaches[/strike through] ... er, party leaders ...or the team captains. Once they are used up, they are gone for that period. Period.
