The United States was probably the most respected nation in the world when we defeated Nazi Germany. The difference is that every single enemy we've fought subsequently has had absolutely zero chance of successfully invading and conquering our country. The people who hold this belief - such as Rubert Murdoch, base their support on Israel not on anything having to do with Jews, jewish culture, or Judaism. They base their support on the fact that Israel frequently stomps the shit out of Arabs and Muslims. There's an undercurrent of the apocalyptic christian belief that when Jesus comes back he's landing in Israel (and then killing all the Jews, double-bonus for these freaks), but mostly it amounts to "Israel kills Arabs real good, so I support Israel real hard."

So when the media criticizes Israel's actions in Gaza, say, they are being "disloyal" to Israel. Which to this odd train of thought, opens the door to allow antisemitic nonsense to spill out - such as say, the lame 'Jews control the media!' canard. This "allowance" for antisemitism towards those declared "disloyal" is another appeal for the fuckwits on the right; They think it grants them leave to say what they really feel about Jews, without censure since the targets are deemed "acceptable."

The sad thing is that it's this right-wing, anti-Arab, pro-war, strongly antisemitic line of thought that forms the core of the "pro-Israel" narrative in the United States... owing in part to the prevalence of media owned by a certain Anglo-Australian Protestant...
