(2,642 posts)Here is the actual answer he gave, if you care to read it:
GQ: How old do you think the Earth is?
Marco Rubio: I'm not a scientist, man. I can tell you what recorded history says, I can tell you what the Bible says, but I think that's a dispute amongst theologians and I think it has nothing to do with the gross domestic product or economic growth of the United States. I think the age of the universe has zero to do with how our economy is going to grow. I'm not a scientist. I don't think I'm qualified to answer a question like that. At the end of the day, I think there are multiple theories out there on how the universe was created and I think this is a country where people should have the opportunity to teach them all. I think parents should be able to teach their kids what their faith says, what science says. Whether the Earth was created in 7 days, or 7 actual eras, I'm not sure we'll ever be able to answer that. It's one of the great mysteries.

His answer is snakeoil.

(17,865 posts)but I do know it is very important economic implications to understand the age and formation of the earth (as a side note also the order of evolution of life). Geologists prospecting for new mineral and petroleum resources make use of the models of geological time to help them find the resources. Fossils are used to assist in dating (along with radiometric dating).
To say you are not a scientist and walk away from the question demonstrates your vast ignorance.
A great story is the finding of the Tiktaalik transitional fossil from fish to amphibian. Paleontologists used geological maps showing dates of exposed rock faces to narrow the search for ths fossil (they when the transitional time should be so they went looking at that time in the rocks). This shows the process in reverse.
The only mystery is a 200 million year time window (about 5% of the total) in which the earth first formed. It is at least 4 billion years old and to deny that fact is to throw out mountains of geological, physics, cosmology, evolutionary science, etc facts that all lead to that conclusion.
