OFA gearing up for 2014!!!!!

DEMS GETTING DATA JUMP ON 2016: The Obama campaign continues to refine, update and expand its vast database, working the muscle to increase its value for 2014 and 2016. The organization wants to avoid a post-2008 lull, when Obama’s high command was so focused on building a government and staving off a depression that some in the grassroots network felt neglected. This time, supporters are already being asked if they are interested in running for office, and “how many hours per week” they would be willing “to volunteer in your community as part of an Obama organization.”

Campaign manager Jim Messina blasted a 24-question email to the campaign’s tens of millions of supporters and eavesdroppers last evening, with the subject line, “Your feedback needed: Take this quick survey.” Participants must enter email address, first and last name, ZIP code, birthdate and gender. This question makes it clear that Obama’s brain trust will keep the machine oiled and cranking: “What would you choose as the top priority for this organizations [sic] in the weeks and years to come?” Choices are: 1) “Passing the President's legislative agenda”… 2) “Supporting candidates in upcoming elections” … 3) “Training a new generation of leaders and organizers” … 4) “Working on local issues that affect our communities.”

Other questions: “Is there anything that could have encouraged you to get involved earlier? … Which of the following campaign activities did you participate in? Select all that apply. [Among the choices: ‘Did data entry or worked with Votebuilder’] … How close was your nearest Obama campaign office? … Were you a member of a Neighborhood Team? … What issues would you be interested in volunteering or organizing around in the future? … In your own words, how would you like to see this organization move forward in the months and years ahead? And how would you like to be engaged as a volunteer and organizer? … Which of the campaign's online tools did you use or share? … Are there any stories or anecdotes you would like to share from your campaign experience? … What is your general feedback on the Obama campaign online, including barackobama.com, call tool, Dashboard, social media such as Facebook and other online tools?” See the survey. http://my.barackobama.com/Survey

5. Elleng, can we maintain our current donation level past November, or do we have to sign up again?

I'll confess, I almost never check my email, as I have to use a different browser and it's too slow.

I think it's useful... Reminds me of the President saying, "This is my last time campaigning for myself" on that last stop before Election Day. I think he wants to stay relevant afterwards, especially when it comes to running operations for future Democratic campaigns.

3. I filled out that

questionnaire this morning.

Last Thursday I was already talking to potential workers for a Congressional campaign in two years. We are one of the few places who sent a new teabagger to D.C. We think we have someone lined up, someone popular and with name recognition, to run against that fool next time.

This is no time to slack. The opposition certainly isn't sitting on their hands.

by adopting a populist, anti-Boner, anti-Cock Bros agenda, and making voting easier. people will flock to the polls, phone backs, and local meetings to support easing of pot laws, progress toward UHC, and tax hikes for the hyper rich used to increase SS and Medicare benefits. I wonder if they have thought of that.

8. I took that survey last night

And was happy to give them a piece of my mind. MY experience with OFA (as a congressional field director) was that they did not play very nicely with the downballot races. A local field organizer in my district went as far as telling people it was illegal to volunteer for more than one campaign (we had many volunteers split their time).

If they want Obama to be effective, he needs a congress, and that involves playing nice with downticket races.

I stated that I did nothing for the campaign except vote for Obama. When you have losers like Holder, Geithner, Nelson with his dead raccoon on his head, and so forth, there is no reason to get out of my chair to help.

Then when you have Obama compromising on healthcare and debt before the repukes even submit an offer, ... well, i find it hard to be enthusiastic.

With the R's unable to regain their footing after the sever beatdown we gave them, we need to spend the next two years keeping them there. With soemthing like OFA, we could actually regain the House, and then the last two years of this administration could seriously kick ass.

Which I found to be both intrusive and scary. They are welcome to ask my age group if they need that info (with gender) but my ACTUAL birth date is more information than I care to give...them or anybody.

The questionnaire won't let you finish without filling in the b-date.

18. The power of fear.
Tue Nov 20, 2012, 11:09 AM
Nov 2012

I filled out the survey. It gave me a chance to express my views about what they should do in the future.

Are you truly so worried about what the Obama campaign might do with your date of birth that you allow it to prevent you from taking advantage of an opportunity to express your opinion? I'm often amazed by how fearful Americans are. Have you thought for one second about the strong disincentives OFA has for misusing your information?

Given how concerned you are about protecting your privacy, I assume you don't have any credit cards. It's amazing how so many people profess concern about political campaigns having access to their age, address, and phone number, yet they have no problems with credit card companies knowing every single thing they spend money on. It's just like how they worry about the government having a say over their heath care, and yet they're perfectly fine giving that power to for-profit health-insurance companies.

As a former scientist and a software developer, I can totally understand why OFA would want your date of birth rather than the age group you fall into. Simply put, they want to be able to use your contact information in the future. They are not collecting information for a one-time survey; rather, they are building a database of potential supporters. If you tell them, for example, that you're in the 30-40 age bracket, in two years they will have no way of knowing whether you are still in that same bracket or in the 40-50 bracket.

But no, don't even bother to think about that. Just make vague accusations about how inappropriate it is that they would want this information.

20. Generalization: "how fearful Americans are"
Fri Nov 23, 2012, 11:13 PM
Nov 2012

I do see a lot of fear mongering, etc by the media (fiscal cliff being the current fear trend) but I don't think ALL Americans are fearful or take much of it seriously. Many, like me, are tired of questionaires that want to much information.

Information is the new currency. I'll keep what's left of mine, thank you. And OFA could have made the birth date optional if they were really that interested in my opinion. Drawing the conclusion that I'm fine with CC companies tracking my purchasing or for profit health insurance because I did not feel it necessary to attach my birth date to my name is really a stretch of judgement.

But no, don't bother to think about that, just make vapid generalizations about people based on their chooising to not answer one question.

21. Do you have a credit card?
Sat Nov 24, 2012, 04:03 PM
Nov 2012

If you have a single credit card, then you are a hypocrite. You trust your credit card company to know your date of birth, but you are outraged by OFA wanting that information. Somehow, the credit card company is trustworthy, but OFA is not.

This reminds me of all those people who would yell at me when I phoned them as an OFA volunteer to discuss the election. They were outraged that the Obama campaign had access to their phone number. But they are perfectly happy being bombarded by advertising on TV that anyone wealthy enough may have paid for.

I did not use any generalizations in concluding that you are fearful. The word you used was "scary". And now you claim "scary" refers to fatigue rather than fear. I don't believe I've ever heard that word used that way before.

By the way, if the OFA campaign made the date of birth optional, they might as well not have asked it at all. Anyone who knows anything about data analysis can tell you that as soon as you make a piece of information optional, the results will no longer be accurate (they will be biased; for example, the probability of not providing one's date of birth may depend on one's date of birth). OFA simply wants to do analysis based on your date of birth, and to be able to use your date of birth in future analyses. But you call that "scary", implying that you are afraid they are going to try to steal your credit card number. We can't have that, can we? Nobody must know your date of birth, except those wonderful credit card companies.
