Or Gerald Ford who was pro choice, pro ERA, and wrote an amicus brief on behalf of his alma mata, the University Of Michigan defending their affirmative action program.

Non-mainstream republicans (the rational ones) either call themselves Libertarians or conservatives...they wince when they are lumped in with the Teabaggers. Sadly, they really aren't that much different except in outrageous idiocy. They just don't get that you simply can't have capitalism without socialism or fascism--you've got to balance the unchecked greed/competition (capitalism) with strong government regulation and controls (fascism) or a very healthy "safety net" (socialism). We do NOT need to get just a "little more" conservative as opposed to getting batshit crazy conservative. We need to get a hell of a lot more liberal before the "sane" conservatives will actually have a point or purpose.

You may want to read a bit about what used to be considered radical in the Republican party.

Today's Republicans outside of the quisling Log Cabin Republicans wouldn't recognize them.
