I think it was on DU that I first saw mentioned the documentary called the Century of the Self, long, 4 parts, old etc. but the main message was marketing. That being said I could say DU also markets to some extent, but all in all, there are many who post a conflicting view, but they still do a pretty good job and need our support.
I'm glad they extended the heart campaign.

things can always get worse if people are not paying attention. Poverty and education play a big role, I've been lucky in that respect, those of who can, need to try and move the needle a little for those who cannot.

maybe I missed that function and do not want to give something else for the admins to do. I just wanted to support DU for all they have done over the past two decades for me, with a long interruption in between.

People in there are diligently posting the Turner Classic Movies scheduled day after day, and they don't get any love or recognition. And they deserve a lot of both!

Watch TCM every night but just rely on what my cable provider gives which is a week in advance.

My contribution arrived only yesterday, and I suddenly have a thousand hearts to distribute with less than a day left, something I never expected to have in the first place. There aren’t enough hours in the day!!

Fiddler on the Roof was the first Broadway show I saw as a kid with a friend's family when I was in grammar school. In the grammar school I attended we had Jewish holidays off, out the norm, although we were not Jewish, but we were happy to have both religious days off as kids The Bar Mitzvah parties for me were always a great time with friends, brings back old memories.

The world is really is as a small place when you expand your horizons. If given the opportunity and are fortunate enough to do so, and that is a big if more for many people, travel/different cultures can expand one's view's, but you need the chance and that is the key.

I never knew what or when Jewish holidays were, vaguely knew that some kids were invited by others to their Bar Mitzvah, but had no earthly idea what that was. In third and fourth grades, I had black classmates and teachers, but didn’t understand that the difference was supposed to matter. In fifth grade, a girl in my class invited me to her family’s house for Passover. I had to ask what in the world that meant, and when I was told she was “very Jewish,” I was too shy to let on I had no idea what that meant, either. Religion was absent in my family, so I wasn’t steeped in all these things people believed in.

We had ancient history in the fifth grade, so I knew the ancient Egyptians believed in Osiris and Anubis, and the ancient Greeks believed in Zeus, Athena and Apollo, but I didn’t get that people still believed in that kind of stuff. Sort of like the Assyrians. I had learned about the Assyrians, too, in my fifth grade ancient history class. I was 22 before I found out that there were still Assyrians all over the Middle East, and that some of them were living in Philadelphia, where I met them. For their part, they were surprised to meet a white guy from the South who had never been to the Middle East, but knew about Assyrians. I said, “sure, ziggurats, Ashur Bannipal.” BIG smiles, believe me!

When I hit puberty, I quickly realized I had what came to be known as “Arafat’s disease.” It’s a skin condition where your facial skin is super-sensitive, and mine turned bright red, like a boiled lobster if I shaved it, even with an electric razor. Well, if you’re a male pubescent teenager in America, you don’t get any girls if you look like a circus freak, so I stopped shaving. My school gave me hell for it, but my social life was more important to me than what the trustees of some school wanted. I quickly found out that it made me “look” Jewish. The look didn’t impart me with any more knowledge about their culture than I had before, but when I entered college at age 18, at least I wasn’t the only guy that looked that way any more, and my social life improved.

I know two people on the board (Rhiannon and Duppers -though Duppers is gone I think) and interact off and on with others. But I tend to pop on frenzy-post and then stay offline for months.

DU has been a source of support for me over the years wrt frustrations irl.

when looking to give hearts I looked at the cancer forum. I was active for awhile under my old alias, sad to see that some had not posted recently.

DU still is good place to be, although I've some breaks and frustrations with the party line in years they still need our support.

Next chapter is what the hell is going on with NJ ballots, I never realized how slanted our ballots are in NJ having never lived in another state/county, a whole other topic of discussion.

She introduced me to DU. She reads DU every day but rarely posts. This is the first year she got DU hearts from anyone other than me.

The DU hearts made her happy for which I am thankful.
