Union members told the event was cancelled due to "technical difficulties". However it has now been announced Assange will be speaking at another event on the same day

Update: In an embarrassing turn of events the Cambridge Union has been forced to admit that Julian Assange will be speaking via videolink to the ConventionCamp conference in Hanover, Germany, on 27th November. This follows the Union's announcement yesterday that Assange had cancelled on his planned Q&A at the Union on the same day due to "technical difficulties" after his spokesperson claimed that the event must be cancelled because his preferred broadcaster, Russia Today, was unable to arrange the technical aspects of the video link.
The Union statement said that: "The Union Society is disappointed in Mr Assanges apparent dishonesty. We would have hoped that any individual or institution claiming to represent the interests of free speech and openness would be more straightforward in their dealings. We apologise to members for the confusion this has caused and the doubts that have arisen following Mr Assanges misleading statement ...

(3,894 posts)technical difficulties and another appointment which either may be appropriately timed, or was set up upon realizing internal England connection issues which is conceivable considering the relationship both have had with the English gov't and it's officials.
I notice that there is nothing about the time of each event, surely he could have two video conferences in one day that wouldn't clash with each other.

(118,320 posts)by video-link; (2) the Cambridge University Student Union Women's Campaign argued that it was inappropriate and insensitive for the Union Society to invite an accused rapist to speak on campus; (3) Assange then said that unfortunately technical difficulties with the Russia Today video-link would prevent him from talking to the Union Society; (4) someone subsequently discovered he now plans another talk by video-link in Germany
What you suggest is, of course, a possibility. But Assange is in the Ecuadorian embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden for prosecution on sexual crimes, which he generally prefers not to discuss, and before fleeing to the embassy, he routinely walked out of interviews if the reporter insisted on discussing the Swedish prosecution. So the most natural guess is that Assange cancelled the Union Society talk because he now simply cannot avoid attention to the sexual allegations in any discussion with that group (because the CUSU anti-rape activists have been so vocal about the matter)

(3,894 posts)I will not even read your opinion of the back story, but will instead focus on what was written. Clearly there is room for more than one appointment each day, millions, billions even, people do it every day.
Alternatively, Assange may indeed be having trouble getting a quality RT connection in England just now, so he may have scheduled the Germany set up when he realized that Cambridge was a nogo.
I see nothing in the article to suggest either of these are patently not possible or likely.

"... The CUSU Women's Campaign have launched a petition to revoke Julian Assange's invitation to speak at the Cambridge Union. Assange is currently scheduled to speak at the Union from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London via videolink on November 27th and is currently facing extradition to Sweden to face trial for sexual assault if he steps foot on British territory. The petition, which is open to anyone to sign and has already received over 400 signatures, criticises the Union for 'riding on a tide of publicity created from the traumatic experiences of rape survivors to raise the profile of their own name' ..."

"Mr Assange has cancelled his upcoming Q&A session at the Union due to technical issues with the video feed at the Ecuadorian Embassy. Because the Embassy does not have a strong internet connection, the only way to produce the live 2-way video feed was by relying on two broadcast vans. (118,320 posts)Confused as to what is actually going on in the Assange vs the Union vs CUSU Women's Campaign situation? Well we are too.

... The Union released a statement on Monday evening about their decision to offer the Wikileaks founder a platform to speak, calling him one of the most recognisable figures in recent years. The CUSU Womens Campaign was quick to respond, however, launching a petition against the event. The petition, which was open to anyone to sign, received over 900 signatures, and criticised the Union for riding on a tide of publicity created from the traumatic experiences of rape survivors to raise the profile of their own name. One commentator on the petition page said: the Union think they are being clever & edgy. They are not. They are shameful. The Womens Campaign also planned to protest the event if it went ahead.
Mid-week it became clear that the Unions own members were also deeply unhappy with the situation, with over 150 members petitioning the Union to cancel the event, resulting in plans for a Special Business Meeting to be held. Had such a meeting taken place, a vote would have been taken on whether Assange should have been allowed to speak, with a minimum of a 75% majority needed for the motion to pass ...
Those who had protested against the invitation were relieved. CUSU Womens Officer, Susy Langsdale, said: The CUSU Womens Campaign is delighted that the Union has cancelled Julian Assange coming to speak. We are, however, particularly amused by their suggestion that the founder of Wikileaks had to cancel a week in advance for technical reasons. She also criticised the Unions behaviour, saying: We are disappointed that the Union has not had the intellectual honesty to admit the real reasons for this disinvitation nor to respond directly to the 178 of their members who expressed concern at the Unions failure to address the wider issues of rape culture ...
More recently, the Union Womens Officer, Lauren Steele, has told Varsity she has felt isolated and humiliated in her role. She has also expressed her hopes of getting the Womens and Diversity Officers a vote on the Union Standing Committee, in the hope of making the Union a more inclusive and self-critical organisation ...
