http://www.afscme31.org/news?id=0454Quinn administration terminates union contract
In an unprecedented step, Governor Pat Quinns administration late today terminated state governments contract with its largest employee union, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 31.
In 40 years of collective bargaining, Pat Quinn is the first and only Illinois governor to terminate a union contract, AFSCME executive director Henry Bayer said. His action will heighten employee frustration, provoke instability in the workplace and make settling a contract more difficult.
AFSCME has been in negotiations over a new collective bargaining agreement for nearly a year. Scheduled to expire last June 30, the previous contracts terms had been extended by mutual agreement of the parties. But following a bargaining session with a federal mediator in Springfield today, the Quinn administration rejected a further extension offered by the union.
Terminating the contract has little immediate practical effect, as all existing terms and conditions of employment remain in place under state law. But it signals the Quinn Administrations lack of respect for the collective bargaining process..."
If he doesn't want to be Governor any more wouldn't it be much easier to just say so!/////n

There's a bipartisan push to cut public pensions in IL. They'll try to push it in the holiday period, when people aren't paying attention -- the usual timing of bad things....
The 'democratic' gov is in the thick of it...

(13,421 posts)5. I have to us air quotes when I refer to Quinn as a Dem.
I had hope for him when he came in to replace Blago. Now, not so much. I am absolutely petrified that our next Governor will be Republican--and I couldn't really blame AFSCME or SEIU if they didn't support Quinn, either.

Teachers and state employees are in a different fund. I'll give you one guess which fund they are gonna raid first...

Mine's underfunded like the others but it's in the best shape of the bunch.
