Today is being promoted as "Small Business Saturday," and I wanted to remind everyone to consider your local family farms if you are looking to patronize a small business. They are under so much stress from agribusiness, and could use your support. Depending on your local weather today, it could make for a nice drive in the country and family outing, and in addition to the obvious fresh produce, the possibilities are endless. Some farms have kids' activities such as hay rides, corn mazes, and petting zoos. Those looking for less commercial gift ideas for the upcoming holidays might find honey, wines, preserves, herbal products, or wool. Some farms offer classes in cheesemaking, horesback riding, herb crafts, etc. which you could give as a gift certificate, while others rent out B & B rooms where you can just relax, fish, or help out with farm chores if you are agricurious! My state has a website with tons of information, and yours probably does, too: <www.picktnproducts.org>
If you are thinking of purchasing a Christmas tree, wreath, or garlands in the near future, consider a local grower!

If you are unable to visit the actual farms, look for Certified Farmers' Markets in your area. Farmers' Markets have become a major source of income for many of our small farmers, made even more appealing because they're able to cut out the middle man (distributors).
