General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsGoing forward, I will be less present here than I have been. I was just counseled about posting during duty hours...
Maybe you remember my post with the message from President Biden on March 8th:
https://www.democraticunderground.com/100218758764
I posted it from my work computer during a break in the action, between a meeting and a teleconference in fact. However, it was flagged as inappropriate use of government resources (My work computer, and DOD bandwidth).
Well, I can't argue that they're wrong.
I was using both those things to post it.
So, I will not be on DU during my workdays, not even to post a lunch break playlist.
I'm not here to bitch that the deep state is against me, or to claim that my rights are somehow being violated.
That's the shit MAGA does.
Simply put, I thought my computer usage was within policy, but I was wrong.
So, if there are gaps in my responses, it's probably because I just don't like any of ya and I'm giving you the cold shoulder.
Or maybe I'm at work.
Peace

I felt for a short period of time we started to make the system more fair for everyone in America but those at the top, rich, mostly white men, got all pissy when the rest of us wanted a level playing field. We're not even asking for what they had, privilege galore, we just want a level playing field & look how they're reacting.

(22,191 posts)and governments allow their people, some don't mind when, as long as you get your work done.
Some only during after-hours. Others, no access (personal) allowed.
Best thing to do is from home, on your own system(s), your own access.
Mine was (access) multi-tiered, in that I had both batch and online systems (all in IT) reporting to me, thus, I had to have 24 x 7-day access to systems, thus, personal use was mixed in there, no issues as issues came up during all hours, thus, allowable.

(12,686 posts)Or before work started. Cubicles and "open office" work sucked for privacy. Until we started Telework and I could work from home and use my non-government mobile on the side when taking breaks.
Yeah, the personal use rules weren't always applied consistently, but then again, the users that were always on Facebook or had a Twitter Feed going in the background were either ADHD and needed that to distract the non-work related part of their brain so they could be productive or they were just keeping the seat warm and ignored until evaluation time, on their way to retirement or change of job title or station.
The worst were the people running a realtor or property management business on the side. Especially if they were in Management.

(25,685 posts)He was rich:
The major guiding principle in the life of Tom Slick was a relentless search for adventure and exploration of the unknown, sparked by his immense curiosity about everything and his willingness to embrace and investigate new ideas. He was a larger-than-life Texas oilman, entrepreneur, and explorer. He climbed mountains in the Himalayas in search of the legendary Yeti. He developed new breeds of cattle. He discovered major oil fields. He founded several research institutes in San Antonio, including the Texas Biomedical Research Institute, Southwest Research Institute, and the Mind Science Foundation. He even wrote and published on the topic of world peace in the 1950s; the Tom Slick World Peace Lectures at the University of Texas LBJ Library and the endowed Tom Slick Professorship of World Peace were established after his death in 1962.
In this revised and expanded edition of her previously published biography, Catherine Nixon Cooke, niece of Tom Slick, has mined personal letters, family papers, archives of the institutes founded by her uncle, and other resources to expand what we know of this enigmatic, energetic adventurer. In addition to relating his better-known exploits and pursuits, Cooke delves for the first time into Slicks shadowy connections with the world of international espionage, including clues that Slick may have been involved in certain operations and interests of the OSS and its successor organization, the CIA.
Illustrated throughout with rare historic photographs, In Search of Tom Slick: Explorer and Visionary will introduce a new readership to this influential yet little known figure in modern history.

In 1941, Tom Slick founded Southwest Research Institute in South West San Antonio. He used to own a bunch of ranchland in the area, but it had been subdivided, however a park and I believe a creek named after him remain. https://sanantonioreport.org/the-trailist-visit-the-loch-ness-monster-at-tom-slick-park/

(13,200 posts)No one expects us to be on a task 480 minutes a day, but I took the time to extract the text from a White House message and post it to a message board. At work on my work laptop. I should have forwarded the email to my personal Gmail account and posted the OP from my personal computer.
The content of the post and the tenor of this message board were not focal points. In fact, my division chief said that he didn't see what the big deal was - The content was ok as far as he could see.
The point wasn't WHAT i posted but how I did so.

At my last job, I showed my coworkers how to erase their tracks at the end of the shift. The PTB never did install keyloggers so it was a quick and easy procedure.
That little peckerhead Texeira most likely ruined it for government workers, especially military. It's going to take a hell of a long time for it all to blow over.

(5,940 posts)I don't post during duty hours for the same reason. I look sometimes but don't post. If I feel a compelling need to add my two cents on something, I take my personal phone to someplace where I get signal (the Pentagon has lousy coverage for me, and that can be a good thing) and provide you all with my wisdom that way.

(54,465 posts)Some 40 years ago, my outfit started making noises when I was taking weekends off to play concerts with my Dutch friends in Holland and Germany. They said, make a choice, do you want to work or play? Well, I wanted to play, of course, but playing music made me a few hundred euros a month, and working paid about 50 times that, with the promise of more if I was good at my job. Bye-bye my fun gigs.
Posting on DU is different, though. That is a question of finding the time at all these days. I'm now station chief for Europe, so I don't have anyone breathing down my neck, but if I have to be in Germany in the morning, France at noon, and Belgium in the evening, the bigger challenge is staying awake, not getting permission!

(10,222 posts)We in the Navy could not use them to call home.
Just kidding. But before cells, about the time corporations were charging huge fees to make calls, we could not call home on Navy phones. It was considered
using government equipment for personal reasons. Especially don't use those huge bricks that first came out as mobile phones.
That stupid policy was quickly rescinded because so many family members calling to find out what happened to their loved ones. On shore, anytime a departments had to work late or had minor delays, the phones started ringing off the hook. Tying up lines and personnel for hours.
