(49,990 posts)More than 26K rape-related pregnancies estimated after Texas outlawed abortions, new study says
Texas saw an estimated 26,313 rape-related pregnancies during the 16 months after the state outlawed all abortions, with no exceptions for survivors of rape or incest, according to a study published Wednesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

(21,570 posts)Thats 55 a day and that is just rapes that actually result in pregnancy. That means, at that rate, there about 620 pregnancies EVERY DAY in the USA. I had no idea the epidemic was that bad!

Here is a comment from one one of the authors of the study
Our study focused on states with total abortion bans (vs all states) because we were specifically interested in estimating the number of survivors of rape in these states. The data we analyzed did not provide information about pregnancy outcomes.
Waris Chiranand suggests that we overestimated rape-related pregnancies in states with total abortion bans, but this apparent difference is related to the denominator used in the calculations. Researchers have estimated that nationwide between 2,872,000[4] and 3,422,000[5] women experienced rape-related pregnancy during their lifetime. The 2.4% estimate from Basile et al[4] that Chiranand cites is the rape-related pregnancy rate among all US women, not just survivors of rape. According to the CDC data we used, the estimated lifetime risk of pregnancy among survivors of rape is 14.9%.[2] Our analysis conservatively adjusted the figure for survivors of rape downward to account for the difference between annual and lifetime rape-related pregnancy rates.
We recognize that some of the terminology in our report was imprecise and left the impression that our estimate of the number of persons reporting a rape was the number of those who reported a single forced vaginal penetration. The CDC data on rape incidence, on which we based our estimates, quantified the number of persons who reported rape over a 12-month period, which may involve multiple incidents during that time, e.g., in cases of rape by an intimate partner or family member, which represent the majority of rape incidents.[2] We have requested a correction to clarify the terminology in our article. This correction does not affect the calculations or implications of our study: that an estimated 64,565 women and girls have experienced rape-related pregnancies in states with total abortion bans remains unchanged.

"It's just the n***ers," they'll assure you.
That said - there are 10,000 births every day in these United States. That 620 pregnancies might be unwanted/unplanned, is probably a conservative estimate.

(13,510 posts)would, but think they believe its a waste of $ because most of the state is red. I think Johnson county is purple or maybe blue. Wyandotte is likely blue and maybe Douglas county. What county are you in. I am in KCMO and depends where you live in Jackson county. Suburbs are more red than blue unfortunately.

(12,185 posts)This needs to be everywhere. A lot of battleground states passed abortion protections so some voters in those states think their rights are protected no matter what. Trump's national abortion ban will superseed state law, people in states like mine, Michigan, need to understand that. abortion is on the ballot in November, and Trump is going to pretend he wants a 16 week ban only, but that's a lie as usual. The GOP will ban all abortion, no exceptions, and then they'll come after contraception, nationwide.

(38,427 posts)I've literally heard women I know say they're so happy that Michigan protected abortion rights so they no longert have to worry about what goes on in Washingtyon in regards to abortion. There's enough people who think they're rights are protected thanks to their state that they don't understand that trump can and will take away their rights nationwide if given the chance.

There must be something in the American water supply that makes people act outside of their interests in general. I've been thinking lately about all the people who want the wealthy and large corporations to pay their fair share of taxes, but elect Republicans. Or I think about voters who are more readily willing to punish the guy who is cancelling student debt for their economic condition rather than the guy who is happy to allow their debt to remain.
