Hoping to encourage other Americans to participate in "Small Business Saturday" as an alternative to big chain-friendly Black Friday, President Obama today visited an Arlington, Va., bookstore to cross some items off his family's Christmas list.
Accompanied by his daughters Sasha and Malia, the president journeyed across the river to One More Page Books, which the White House described as an "independent, neighborhood bookstore." After consulting his Blackberry for an apparent holiday wish list, he purchased 15 children's books before even browsing the store.
"Preparation," he told shop owner Eileen McGervey, according to the reporter who covered the visit for the White House pool. "That's how I shop."
Mr. Obama declined to answer a question about the fiscal cliff. "We're doing Christmas shopping," he said. "Happy Thanksgiving, folks."

____ As he came out of the bookstore, (the President) walked up to supporters who were applauding and cheering along two ropelines.
Arent you cold out here? he asked.

____ Taking to Twitter himself after the shopping excursion, Obama wrote: "My family & I started our holiday shopping at a local bookstore on #SmallBizSat. I hope you'll join & shop small this holiday season."

(149,718 posts)Just a dad and his daughters, out Christmas shopping.......A tiny bit of "normalcy." I loved the clip....it really shows how it is for them.
Thanks for this tiny peek into their lives.
It was wonderful.

(11,607 posts)He is setting a great example. Stores like that are always in danger of being driven out of business by Amazon and big chain bookstores. It's kind of amazing that stores like that have survived, and hopefully they will get a boost after being visited by the president.

I wish he would stop calling me ....dammit I have a Christmas tree to put up...run the world on YOUR TIME pal.

(11,607 posts)Is he really the first president to have one? I remember members of Congress using Blackberries when I interned in 2002.

(53,661 posts)Thanks for the thread, bigtree. I would've been crying with joy if I'd been there.
Instead of negative media coverage crowds going crazy to buy foreign made goods and workers not getting a well-deserved holiday, we have a president setting an good example.

(32,094 posts)You know what you're getting ahead of time, so there's not much surprise to it, thanks to news stories like this. At least in this case, the kids who are getting those books probably don't read look at the news reports.

(71,611 posts)I get a real kick out of their relationship with their dad ... loving and respectful ... BUT ... they obviously "do their job" and hold pins at the ready for any ego-balloons that appear. Malia is becoming a WOMAN ... but seems to have her head on straight. Sasha is my favorite of all the Obamas, of course. She's got 'tude. I just love a kid with 'tude.
They're a family that HUGS! It's impossible to overstress the importance of hugging, imho. Puppy piles.
