Some long-standing questions answered for me, at least:

Two to be exact….the first concerns Ari Melber and his fascination with Rap Music. Today on his show, he admitted that his father, apparently a physician, only allowed Ari to watch TV one hour per week. Thus, he has had the pendulum swing, is a TV personality and is now living his lost adolescence by idolizing a “forbidden” (for him) genre and thumbing his nose at his upbringing.

As a post-script I might add that that officious Zeke Emanuel stated on the same show that he raised his children without a TV in the home. I’m certain that years of therapy ensued for his offspring.

But infinitely more importantly, and I cannot believe that this never ever occurred to me, I realized what Trump sees himself as. If you have read, not simply watched the films, of Ian Fleming’s James Bond, it might be apparent that Trump embodies many of the revolting characteristics of the villain of, in my humble opinion, quite possibly the most interesting novel, Auric Goldfinger.

Goldfinger was depicted by Fleming as the following:

One of the wealthiest men in his country

Loves all things golden or reminiscent of gold

Cheats at golf without hesitation, obviously, and ruthlessly

Is and has been involved in criminal activities but masquerades as a legitimate businessman-jeweler

Uses women as showpieces and dismisses, even kills them without compunction

Has severe bowel issues for which he has many methods of managing them

Is a narcissist

Is overweight and unattractive

Is a traitor - works for the Russians

Attempts to undermine the underpinnings of the US economy by removing all the Gold in Ft Knox

Plans to murder the entire town of Ft Knox including the military BUT lies to his gangster comrades And tells them that it’s just a sleeping potion. Uncaring genocidal sociopath

Believes he is more intelligent than anyone else

Believes he is more competent than anyone else

The book intricately describes all of the above attributes. He is a grandiose, much smarter (but not quite smart enough) version of Trump.

I submit this for your approval…or disapproval.

It would be much less if this was 1960 instead of 2024.

a bit better now. It is the classic “walk a mile in my shoes” story. I am sure it was spurred by complaints from the viewers and had to be addressed. Goldfinger is interesting but I don’t think I have to try to understand the orange clown. There is no excuse for a person like him. He is a sick f@@k and the bain of all humanity. He needs a great comeuppance.

5. Ari Melber's penchant of quoting rap and hiphop

... well OK we can feel bad for him because his Dad was a tyrant.

Now Ari is rich and famous, and he can listen to rap and hiphop all day long if he wants to. But that doesn't mean he should quote these stupid lyrics to his TV audience. We (most of us) don't love that music. And even if we did love it, we still wouldn't want to hear the lyrics spoken by Ari, who is NOT a hiphop artist.

My favorite form of music is old, obscure German Volkslieder, but I'd be foolish to start quoting those lyrics to you or anyone else. Obviously you have no interest in 200-year-old songs from another country. I respect that, so why doesn't Ari?

I do like the guy and I frequently watch his show. But the rap lyrics are really getting on my nerves.

There was a discussion about this yesterday and I have yet to encounter anyone who like his lyric quotes. And yes, even if he quoted music I like, it still would be totally out of place on his kind of show. However, I do appreciate his legal expertise.

He doesn’t even do it well. I figured maybe he was trying to appeal to Black viewers but Holy Cannoli is he ever off-base!

I find myself wanting to tell him - “for Pete’s sake, dude! STOP trying to be something you’re not!” It doesn’t make him sound cool, it doesn’t make him sound like a rapper. He’ll never be authentic in that regard. Doesn’t even get close. WAY too white-bread.

…and it’s not because he quotes rap. It would annoy me if it were rock or classical because it seems out of place. Read all of Ian Fleming’s books. Your analysis of Goldfinger was well done

Thank you for the Goldfinger section. I read the books many years ago, but had completely forgotten them. A truly interesting, disturbing, comparison.

I'm not a lawyer and he has a way of breaking down complicated legal matters for dummies like me.

But yeah, the rap lyrics are inappropriate and annoying to us who don't enjoy the scene. He should get his own hip hip TV show and he could sing and dance, and wear the outfits. I would turn it off, but others might like it.

not understand that apparently only finding expressive, pertinent meaning in one broad genre of music/lyrics to the near exclusion of all others is a negative. For a program that seems to want to touch on a range of topics in politics, law, society and the struggles/burdens of people within society then I don't understand how you could not find a place for lyrics from genres like Irish Rebel Songs, Appalachian Mountain Music, Labor Movement Songs etc. I like Ari well enough generally but I wonder sometimes about his range or whether some of that is the production team making choices rather than Ari alone.

AM had more time to devote to music given all that time away from television. Just curious if anyone would be as critical or curious if he was a country or classic rock fan.

I don't have any hip hop in my music collection, but I have no overall negative reaction to the genre as a whole. As a matter of fact, for years I've considered some rap artists and their clever use of English comparable to Shakespeare. The space rap takes in Melber's broadcasts may be forced at times, but I say let Ari be Ari. His rap references are at least relatable. Live and let live.

I never read Fleming, but to be repetitive, his reflections on narcissists, Shakespearean.

Close to 80 here and love Ari. His rap references to me seem to be about appealing to a larger audience and perhaps a nod to a portion of our society who are traditionally discounted and ignored. I know if I was a young black man and heard this 'cracker' quoting one of my favorite artist, I just might lend an ear to what I usually didn't pay attention to! Peace out yall.
