In any event, Todd’s kamikaze mission opened the floodgates, unnerving Conde and the NBC News leadership, who seemed to anticipate the impending insurgency and frantically tried to pre-empt it. On Sunday, Budoff Brown reached out to McDaniel’s aide and former chief of staff at the R.N.C., Richard Walters, to see if there were any friends or colleagues who could speak up on her behalf. The two sides also discussed having these folks call attention to what they saw as a double standard—after all, this was the same network that was turning Psaki, a former Biden White House Press Secretary, into a Maddow-adjacent prime time star. Walters later assured Budoff Brown that they’d been able to advance conservative pushback on social media against Todd, specifically, and that this might give NBC News some cover, for which Budoff Brown thanked him.

She is clearly a craven fascist fluffer with zero journalistic integrity and zero regard for the truth.

9. It's disconcerting that at least three high profile women were involved in McDaniels hiring

Carrie Budhoff Brown, Rebecca Blumenstein and Rashida Jones (along with male Cesar Conde). No doubt it's not been an easy road for the three women to rise to the top of the power structure at NBC. For some reason I expect better judgement from women in positions of power. There are calls for all four to step down. We'll see what happens by the time the McDaniel mess gets swamped by other stories. But even if they survive, their reputations will be diminished.

Jon Stewart is another one - since 2009! Stewart once made a mild joke about not having the energy to yell for thirty minutes like Keith Olbermann, and that was all it took. Dozens of tweets over the years about how NOBODY SHOULD LIKE JON STEWART HE'S NOT FUNNY. NOBODY SHOULD THINK JON STEWART IS SMART HE'S A DOODYHEAD.

The same news source - Puck - reported that his "talks" with MSNBC about coming back were one-sided lobbying on his part to replace Chris Hayes. Puck quoted from a pages-long email arguing that Chris Hayes' ratings were not good enough and Keith would save them. Hypocritical, no? Keith issued a denial, but it was a denial that he tried to get Chris Hayes fired, which is not the same as taking his time slot. Anyway, he switched targets after more than a year of this when it became known Rachel was going to do Monday only. Among his many complaints relayed to the Daily Beast about Rachel's "veto" was that she did not answer his email apologizing for the conflict that led to him not speaking to her for eleven years - which was only offered after his other efforts to undo the veto failed.

I still listen most days, but man I am sick of his "punching down" at dozens of mildly famous anchors and reporters, at ESPN, NBC, CNN. He constantly insults most of the MSNBC anchors - including Jen Psaki, btw. This NBC bigwig just suggested Jen Psaki and Ronna McDaniel had equivalent backgrounds in an administration. Keith has said that Jen is no good at her new job. Neither are Alex Wagner, Steve Kornacki, or Chris Hayes. Lawrence and Rachel are horrible people in general. So, gee, if it is even true that Rachel had the last word on who would replace her T-F, she would have been wise. The anchors often cover big stories as a team, how would that work with him???

And then as a host. So did Larry King at CNN. I'm not surprised, from her earliest days at Air America it was obvious she was special, not just smart and well-informed but warm and funny and FAIR.

Rachel has said several times, including right after MSNBC fired Keith and right after he quit to go to Current TV, that she would not have a TV career without him giving her a start. Whatever led to the years of not speaking, I have no idea. I don't think either of them has offered any specifics. I know which one seems less inclined to pick fights.

Don't get me wrong, I love to hear Keith unleash nastiness at people who have too much power and influence and abuse that - Trump, Greene, Jordan, Cruz, etc. Even if his insulting comment is unfair or flat-out below the belt, I see it as "punching up" and I just enjoy it. I wish he would stick to that and leave good or harmless people alone.

10. The level of navel-gazing our modern media manages is epic
Thu Mar 28, 2024, 08:38 AM

I have never seen people think so highly of themselves, believe the world is so centered on themselves, and feel their importance is so outsized to their actual function in life (or zero function at all, if you only count people under 50).

It is truly an impressive bubble they've managed.

And they're not even actual journalists. They're just pundits and media personalities and glorified newsreaders. As if they're actually on the beat somewhere doing anything at all. These people have underpaid interns and producers managing the day-to-day. When did they get their last scoop, at a cocktail party in the Hamptons?

They have spent an entire week on this.

The older I get, the more I realize adults don't often act like it as much as one would hope. The more "media personalities" talk, the more I realize they all think they're still in high school. Gossipy, mean girls and boys who are insecure and compensate with an air of superiority that is almost entirely unearned in the vast majority of them.

What are they experts in, exactly? Hair and make up? On cable news, I can name maybe three people - maybe - who I'm like, "Yes, I can see this person has thought deeply and actually read books. I will listen and think about what they have to say." Maybe three.

And I might be being generous here.

And let's just note that Keith Olbermann, raging misogynist, is still be bandied around. No one wants to work with the guy, and every time I turn around, he's taking shots at a woman somewhere. But yeah, let's not read into that and keep him going.

Case in point right there.
