SPOTLIGHT RACE: Safiyah Jackson for NC-HD37

Safiyah is the granddaughter of a domestic worker and the daughter of middle-class parents. Raised in a close-knit church, school, neighborhood, and family environment, stable and nurturing communities have shaped her foundation. Throughout her life, a pursuit of learning and a commitment to excellence have guided her journey. Safiyah has the ability to forge deep connections that have led to lifelong friendships, inspired her to serve others, and fueled her joy for meeting new people.

As an early childhood advocate, Safiyah believes the well-being of any community is determined by the well-being of its youngest members. Every issue that matters for NC requires consideration of what it takes to create positive experiences and environments for children. When families are supported from infancy through age 8, from hospital, to home, community, and school, our world becomes brighter. With two decades of experience as an educator and coach, Safiyah’s values are rooted in community, curiosity, and compassion.

Her unwavering commitment to our youngest residents has led her into leadership roles, including museums, preschools, family childcare homes, early elementary schools, public and private philanthropic organizations, and higher education institutions. Direct experience with children, and the adults who care for them, provides a deep understanding of their needs and challenges—and what works to create opportunities for all.

Safiyah keeps track of child and family policy, legislation, and funding and her advocacy is always informed by the lived experiences of those impacted. Guided by her educator's heart and business mind, Safiyah has a track record of effectively aligning strategic planning with day-to-day operations, a skill honed early in her career as a marketing and sales manager at Ford Motor Company. Her leadership style fosters open communication and collaboration to reach balanced solutions. Safiyah holds Master's degrees in Business Administration from Florida A&M University, Early Childhood from National Louis University (NLU), and School Psychology from NLU.

While serving on the board of Raleigh Little Theatre, Safiyah finds joy in the arts—attending theater and studying children's literature. Safiyah has been engaged with the state and county Democratic party, her homeowners association, and the SOAR Collective giving circle.
