MI-HD85: Embattled Ottawa County deputy health officer running for state representative seat

OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – The Ottawa County deputy health officer is challenging incumbent state Rep. Bradley Slagh, R-Zeeland, for the 85th House of Representatives district.

Mansaray, who will run as a Democrat, has worked for the Ottawa County Department of Public Health for the last two decades as a health educator, epidemiologist and then as deputy health officer. She previously worked as an adjunct professor at Grand Valley State University.

In the last year, Mansaray has been one of the health department employees who drew criticism from the ultra-conservative majority on the county board of commissioners, who frequently make anti-vaccine and anti-COVID-19 mitigation measure statements.

During a lengthy legal and mediation battle over the health officer’s employment status with the county, Mansaray’s employment was also on the chopping block under a proposed settlement agreement.

According to several commissioners, Mansaray would have had to resign in a proposed settlement that would have also required Mansaray’s boss, Adeline Hambley, to resign in exchange for a $4 million payout.
