(8,835 posts)same guy who was spouting all the bullshit about engineering in the 9/11 aftermath......
Along with the countless, self appointed "Expert" talking heads on Fox News.
When born, the Dr should've put a clear glass marble in their navel so they could see out with their head up their ass......

(98 posts)Doctors shouldnt confuse decades of intensive study and experience with infallibility.
Case in point, I was right in my self diagnosis and my surgeon was wrong.

(90,714 posts)I sincerely mean that. It is important to advocate for yourself, and to have someone on your side I have a trove of family stories, which I will spare you.
Welcome to DU.

(98 posts)You pretty well summed up what happened.
I watched and analyzed my symptoms, tried to explain my theory to my
surgeon. He refused to even listen to me. I ended the doctor-patient
relationship.
Im a retired systems engineer, so I am a fairly good observer.
I went to a new surgeon who did listen to me and we solved the problem.
My life was never in any danger, but I did avoid considerable pain and
uncomfort.
Thanks for the welcome.

(33,163 posts)It was a packaged deal. A pair of gold leaf sneakers, a quality motel bible, a prestigious university degree, a grest bridge, and I threw in an authentic illegal caravan taco truck for free.
All at a criminally low price.

(6,189 posts)It benefits the GOP agenda of creating dumber and dumber citizens who become dumb voters.
They are dumb voters because the students haven't been taught critical thinking skills.
Eventually, they elect low-IQ legislators who perpetuate the dumbing down of more and more individuals who lack critical thinking skills and are more than happy to follow anyone who plays to their desires, fears, and hatreds.
The result is a "45" being held to their heads....with a vote for me or else's demands that play to their desires, fears, and hatreds.

(14,764 posts)On "most" large ships, the power for propulsion and the power for lighting are entirely different systems.
The engines that power the ship drive generators that power electric motors that turn the propellers.
Steering may or may not be powered by those engines, but usually are.
The rest of the ship is powered by separate redundant generators, apu's, that can be run even when the main engines are off. They power pumps, thrusters, emergency equipment, lighting, hvac, comm, etc. Critical navigation control systems usually have there own backup power.
So to have the lights "blink out" and have the ship go into a state where it couldn't maneuver was unusual. Redundancy should have prevented that.
But it had gone through a period of severe electrical malfunctions at the dock. So maybe some ships engineer mcguyvered something until they could get back home, and the duct tape and tie wraps gave way?
No doubt this is ripe for conspiracy theories. This accident shouldn't have happened. Engineering systems are designed to prevent it. Redundancy is built in. This is not an old ship.
