Republican Suggests Thousands of Seniors Shouldn't Be Voting

Republican Senate candidate Eric Hovde suggested most nursing home residents should not be voting because they only have "five, six months life expectancy."

Hovde is challenging Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin in Wisconsin, a crucial swing state that could determine which party controls the Senate and whether President Joe Biden or former President Donald Trump wins the 2024 presidential race. While Baldwin has easily won reelection in the past, Republicans see the close presidential race as an opportunity to flip the Senate seat, largely rallying around Hovde ahead of the August 13 primary.

Hovde, who is endorsed by Trump, is facing criticism over recent remarks made about nursing home residents voting in the 2020 presidential election during an April 5 interview on the Guy Benson Show.

While Hovde did not support Trump's unproven claims the 2020 presidential election was stolen via widespread fraud, he did share some concerns about the election when pressed.

Keeping on speaking Hovde. You're doing a great job.

The latest New York Times/Siena College national poll, conducted in late February, showed Biden with a 9-point lead over Trump among likely voters 65 and older, 51 percent to 42 percent — even as Trump led the overall survey by 4 points.

They intentionally waited until most of the people that remembered Hitler/fascism/etc were dead before rolling this out full stop?

And besides the fact that so many people from that era have died, I think they were betting that many Americans are too poorly educated to know about the 1930s and 1940s.

...we have a lower limit to the voting age so why not have an upper limit? Once a person gets to the age when they don't really have to live with the consequences of a bad decision, then a bad decision is easy to make. Hell, how about if you've only got ten years left maybe you shouldn't be making decisions for anyone. I understand that in this year's national election we really don't have a choice but this needs to be a seriously considered issue. I've got elder relatives who still gripe about the Civil rights act and interracial marriage. They vote.

I’m 75 never voted for a republican in my life I don’t know why you would want to put an upper age limit on it. Especially when our president is 82. Think it through, please. And remember no taxation without representation

Clearly went for Trump.

Gen X was actually just barely Biden, so might be skewing more Republican in the last 4 years, but don't have numbers for that.

It was the generations younger than X that got Biden elected.

11. What a truly terrible idea

The elderly are still citizens and certainly should have a right to vote. Meanwhile, people in their twenties are "making decisions" that affect me and my family, decisions that I might not agree with.

Yes there are still people who gripe about Civil rights and marriage equality, but you will find that with young people as well as old people. Young people who probably vote.

Picking and choosing who we want to vote and who we want to exclude tends to be a republican idea, one they try every election with stricter voting laws and voter intimidation. That is not how a democracy is suppose to work.

Tell an elderly veteran who risked his life for his country that you think he/she is too old to vote now. That their interests and opinions no longer are important.

So at what age do you think I should no longer be considered a valid citizen of this country?

Seniors should be voting for Biden. We just got Social Security good enough so we can practically live off of it, and Republicans just can’t stand it

It's not an issue anyway; if they die before election day, their votes will be removed and not counted. If they live till Nov. 6, they will count.

Worth a shot to stop a dictator.
