Having a trans daughter was this man's wake-up call. This story just made me cry.

SMITHVILLE, Mo. (AP) — Before his transgender daughter was suspended after using the girls’ bathroom at her Missouri high school. Before the bullying and the suicide attempts. Before she dropped out. Before all that, Dusty Farr was — in his own words — “a full-on bigot.” By which he meant that he was eager to steer clear of anyone LGBTQ+.

Now, though, after everything, he says he wouldn’t much care if his 16-year-old daughter — and he proudly calls her that — told him she was an alien. Because she is alive.

“When it was my child, it just flipped a switch. And it was like a wake-up," says Farr, who is suing the Platte County School District on Kansas City’s outskirts.

Looking back, Farr figures his daughter, the youngest of five, started feeling out of place in her own body when she was just 6 or 7. But he didn’t see it, even as they fished and camped together.

You're right, but at least he changed. Some parents would disown their child. I've known a few in my lifetime.

It's a good article and I hope some of the people who need to read it do.

It's not easy to admit being wrong and I give full props. If we can't embrace those who are willing to change, then who are we? How do we move forward?

People can change. Hell, back in '80 I was a republican. There was an error on my voter's registration that prevented me from voting for reagan. Then, I got "woke." 😆

And never looked back.

Hearing the stories of ordinary people is so powerful and can change minds. I've seen it happen in my own family and it's not always because "it happened to them" but because they could relate to people who share their experiences with all of us..

so happy he is now a vocal advocate for her…….so sad as others have said, so many go it alone, and lotsa times never make it. Suicide ends up being their only out.

If he had an ounce of empathy, he'd have been able to relate to otehrs going through this before it he and his family were. Republicans lack empathy, that's the key personality trait that makes them not be Democrats.

Good to have a new ally, but he's still a horrible person.
