I'd have more respect for him and his opinion if he gave donated all the money he made from the "filth" for the last 9 years. Somehow I doubt he'll donate that money. He is coming across as extremely self-righteous.

I'm just saying it is extremely hypocritical for him to say the show is filth while he is keeping the money from it.

Maybe he thinks that god put him in this filthy environment as a spiritual test. Yield not to temptation and all that.

I didn't find them filthy... just a tad ho-humish. The extreme prudishness that the puritans brought over to America is finally starting to crumble, and I suppose for a while we will have to suffer a nation that is behaving like a giggly junior high student.

Hopefully we'll get over it soon and move on to more interesting humor. At least we've evolved past most of the fart jokes.

I don't normally find it all that funny, but I do think it is good in one way. Like you mentioned it shows that America is finally moving past its puritanical views, which is always a good thing.

He's trying to impregnate her so the whole episode was about his penis, scrotum, testicles, jewels, boys, nutbag, etc. etc. I don't think they skipped any of them. The other sitcom was about two women who are starting a cupcake store. One was all about selling her eggs because "face it, look at my boobs, I'm like a human incubator", the other about non stop best sex she's ever had with her boyfriend.

I don't mind the language... I'm a nurse. I've seen 'em all. It just seemed a bit juvenile in the humor.

I love Big Bang and there is plenty of sexual humor there, but the difference is that the jokes are funny.

I've tried watching it, and while I wasn't morally offended, I found myself intellectually insulted by smart ass retorts that would make a seventh grade student roll his eyes.

I'm sure the sitcom "Three's Company" was also labeled "filthy" in it's day, but that show now appears Shakespearean by comparison, and that's sad.

I keep saying that "Idiocracy" is a documentary.

Less popular sitcoms, like Suburgatory, Community, and The Middle actually use semi-complex plot lines, more sophisticated one liners that don't sound like school yard retorts, and do it without a distracting laugh track to cue the slack jawed viewer that a joke just salied past them.

The fact that Two and a Half is the comedy that creates all the buzz is sad indeed. Perhaps American culture is finally ready for a return of The Three Stooges, because the old crosscut saw across the head gag never gets old to average viewers.

But not in this one.

The irony, therefore, is that almost 2000 years after Juvenal's time, TV comedies (which I haven't watched for decades) are their own form of satire, or at least commentary on the contemporary culture. That one of the stars of such a program is turning christian in protest is just, well, further irony.

Maybe I should give the show a second chance.

The show hasn't changed. It's always been full of sexual references. I know that Kirk Cameron had issues with some of the story lines on Growing Pains, but I don't believe he ever criticized the show publicly. Alan Thicke advised him that if he thought Growing Pains was too racy, he'd better turn to Christian entertainment, which is exactly what he did after the show was over. I wonder if Angus is one of these child actors that's been supporting his entire family and he's continued doing it under duress. Well, he's 18 now. If he's miserable he should quit. Maybe that's why they had his character join the Army. They're probably going to send him to Afghanistan.

I have tried to understand the humor of this show. I did not know that the 14 year-old demographic that all of its humor must be aimed at was so vital to CBS.


I would imagine this tired expensive old show is probably on its last legs.

As for the kid? Are we sure of what context this was said in, and does it reflect his normal stance?

sort of an inside joke, but now it's like viewers are beaten over the head with it. The show was funny when Jake was a chubby 12-year-old interacting with Charlie (e.g., the ballet lessons and performing "Bohemian Rhapsody&quot . Now they're caricatures -- too slutty, too dumb, too conniving, too cheap. It's way past time to hang it up, but I guess there's still a lot of money to be made...

The "lovable loser" shtick lasted as long as he had *some* redeeming qualities, but that was lonnnnng ago.

There's nothing creative/original to many of these sitcoms... it's like the writers are perusing Craigslist personals for ideas. And lifting from "Seinfeld."

I watched the whole series on DVD, tried watching the post-Charlie Sheen episodes, & gave up. Somewhere along the way, they stopped letting the characters evolve. Charlie Sheen was right---the show was/is really that bad.

In the case of Angus' character, they kept him stupid, really stupid, to the point that their only option was to have him enlist in the military instead of going to college. Completely wrote him into a corner.

John Cryer's character?? Don't get me started. I'm more repulsed by his character than I ever was by Charlie Sheen's. He's not just a moocher, he's a thief. And that is not funny.

Yeah, though I found it entertaining (haven't watched since he became more grown up though) the show is garbage. He thinks it is filth though because of some paranoid religious belief that watching the show is the plan of "the enemy" (Satan). It's just a show with characters who have little redeeming qualities, a parade of women who are little more than sex toys for the men, and the same rehashed low brow gags over and over. It's a successful formula for a cheap laugh, and not part of some cosmic supernatural plot.

Also, if he thinks the show helps Satan, then he should leave. Wouldn't their version of God be more concerned with him working directly in supporting the devil's plan than a potential lawsuit?

If the fundamentalists are promising him something he might think it worth his while to throw in with them. I predict his disappearance from the scene in 3...2...1...

when having to deal with being famous way before they've had a chance to develop a normal sense of who they are. This is better than him being drugged out and/or in prison.

It is. Couldn't watch it with Charlie Sheen and it's worse with the 70's show nitwit. Horrible show. Why did Angus' mother let him perform in the show at such a young age around all that sexual innuendo.

crude and kind of funny, or just plain crude. To me what counts is whether it is genuinely funny or not. Carlin and Pryor worked very blue and they made me laugh so hard I thought I was going to pass out. They also made me think. Smarmy sex jokes that never would have made it into a Playboy cartoon back in the bunnymag's '60s-'80s heyday just aren't funny unless you're 14.

Too much of today's TV humor - and I don't watch much anymore - is crude for the sake of being crude. And yes, I am looking straight at you, Seth McFarlane, even though I enjoy Family Guy more often than not, and BTW, your other shows suck donkey turds with hurricane force. There is nothing wrong with a well-timed fart joke as such, but when entire episodes of sitcoms are nothing but fart jokes or their comedic equivalents, things become desparately unfunny and very quickly.

I think the bronies are on to something in their enthusiasm for My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. It's cute, smart, designed for audiences of all ages (so says creator Lauren Faust) and beautifully animated and acted. It's a welcome oasis of what is good, praiseworthy and decent (in the non-puritanical sense of the word) and a wonderful escape from the crude, the crass and the gross. Not that I want the latter to go away entirely as it is necessary once in a while. But there's no need to be as dumb and all-pervasive as it has become.

So while I will still watch Family Guy, I find MLP:FIM more satisfying entertainment on many more levels, and I don't have kids (though I am a lifelong animation geek).
