Both Biden and Trump have a whole constellation of fundraising vehicles both officially under their control and those that are required to operate independently. But the simplest distillation of the asymmetry between their levels of activity so far is the spending from their campaigns last month.
Thats the money spent on direct campaign activities, like producing and placing advertising, employee payroll and political consulting. And just from the totals, youd be forgiven for thinking the two men were running for different offices.
Bidens campaign spent $29.2 million in March, much of which about $21.8 million went toward advertising. The presidents campaign launched a major advertising blitz in seven swing states following last months State of the Union address.
In contrast, Trumps campaign, which is mostly keeping its powder dry for the fall, spent just $3.7 million. His other groups did spend money on fundraising costs and legal fees but when it came to core campaign outlays in March, Biden outspent Trump by nearly a factor of eight. Trumps campaign spent less last month than Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) perhaps the most vulnerable senator from either party did for his reelection bid.
And its not as simple as Biden was advertising in March, and Trump wasnt. In other ways outlined in their reports, the incumbents campaign is more robust. Biden spent $2.3 million on payroll in March nearly four times Trumps $597,000.

Biden, as well as our whole roster of Senators, potential Senators, House members and potential House members, Governors and potential Governors, and so on down the line, need to appeal not only to educated people who can be convinced it's to their advantage to vote Democratic. We need to appeal to uneducated people who vote according to their emotions (easily manipulated by right-wing media, and nearly impossible to dissuade, once convinced). We also need to convince people whose opinions are influenced not by reality, but by what they hear from religious leaders, many of whom have political agendas of their own, but will never admit it to the ones they preach to.
In other words, it costs us more to get votes from their choir, because it takes a lot more time and effort (and thus money) to reach them. Being more critical, our own choir costs more to preach to than theirs does for them. If the Democrats raise three times as much as the Republicans do, in terms only of money, I'd say that puts our chances at about even.

(34,510 posts)Won here by a good margin in 2020, but polls show that gap has narrowed considerably, and Trumpkin with a vest won since then . I hope the campaigns have better data that show Biden has bounced.back.
