General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI know I can be slow. But I just realized that tfg's case to the SCOTUS would automatically
make him immune from everything is akin to making him the dictator of the US. He wouldn't have to set up a bunch of loyalists to support him. Just do like Putin does. I guess I had thought it had something to do with tfg's previous trials, (well it does) but gaining full control where you can throw your opponents out of windows is what he wants and that is what he will get if this passes.
It is really a terrifying thing to think about. All of a sudden our democratic republic turns into a dictatorship. And I do not think these MAGA goons have any idea that it could happen

(1,348 posts)If SCOTUS gave Trump full immunity that would extend to Biden too. However, Biden wouldnt use that immunity to remain in power even if it meant Trump would be inaugurated. Were too comity, bipartisanship, rule of law, democratic principles, etc to use that tool even if not doing so meant our destruction And another Trump presidency would mean just that.

(32,866 posts)Not because we agree with fascist dictatorships, but because it's time for us to fight fire with fire.
If you think there was a lot of pressure to indict, you haven't seen anything yet.

(12,402 posts)Trump will, to stop this current case and all other cases.

(34,143 posts)Then my suggestion to Biden would be for him to send out Seal Team 6 (or whoever would be appropriate) to assassinate TFG. Then Biden could retire, knowing that the US is safe from the threat of a Trump dictatorship.
Bonus - we'd finally get our first woman as President!
Just kidding of course, but if the President is above the law, Biden could do it without any legal repercussions. SCOTUS needs to consider that while they are pondering if they can get TFG off the hook.

(3,065 posts)I mean, it would mean that Biden could have him thrown in a hole somewhere, or out a window, and there should be no crime?
Oh, wait. I'm pretty sure they mean only Republican presidents have absolute immunity. And actually not ALL Republicans...only the twice-impeached, lying, obese, orange-hued, seditionist (your own line of adjectives here) ones.

(49,702 posts)Biden or Harris to have the same powers. Plus, other Dems may win.
So, big NO to immunity.

(23,676 posts)is to not rule against him until the very last day they can and thus delay the trials. So that's what they are doing.

(5,483 posts)but not announce until jan 21. effectively handing the ring of power directly into the tiny littl;e fingers of this 2 bit dark lord.
this conversation reminds me of peter jackson's brilliant presentation of "the council of elromd.." i must take the gandalf role and warn that no one, not even biden can be trusted with that much power.

(5,094 posts)because, sooner or later, SCOTUS would become irrelevant. If the orange Caligula ever regains power, why would he need a SCOTUS to approve or uphold any any action he takes. And if any SCOTUS member objects, there is always Seal Team 6.

(960 posts)If such immunity is granted, fire six Supreme Court Justices and make Trump ineligible before the election.

(7,535 posts)... but they might glom on to the the idea that he was acting in the outer edges of Presidential power. Thatr's complete bullshit, of course, but we know Thomas and Alito at least will support that.

(2,473 posts)It's really terrifying that SCOTUS decided to take the case, even if all they do is give him defacto immunity by delaying the cases. Scary, indeed.
Justice matters.
(6,974 posts)they want to rule definitively for the entire country instead of for just the DC circuit as the appellate court stated he is not immune.
It's speculation but it's a good point.
FHRRK
(585 posts)But I think they are just wasting time. They will not announce ruling until August, kick it back down to DC. Thus the clock is run out until the election.
Give tRump mostly everything he needs. If Biden wins it will go away, if tRump wins they will then rule immunity.

(2,646 posts)can't remember where I heard, but recently they have delayed announcements for about a month. I believe it was Elie Mystal, I will need to go see if I can find his comments.

(9,151 posts)Putin has had thrown out of windows, poisoned, etc. Its those close to him more and more. Im sure they never thought they would criticize him at one point but when a dictator starts interfering with your business or money, friends or family it makes it hard to keep quiet.
Republicans better get woke before they are put through the meat grinder of dictatorship.

(15,415 posts)sometimes I think it would be better if we were in a dictatorship IF the dems were in charge.
I'm sure they feel the same way about Trump

Immunity granted, you're advising Biden.
Why worry about Trump. Six SCOTUS justices, Seal Team Six; Three SCOTUS justices left.

(43,755 posts)Sam has immunity from sanity. Don't think SCOTUS-6(R) couldn't carve out a personalized exception for Trumpie.
brush
(54,167 posts)He can't very well be a dictator if he's again an election loser, which if looking more and more like what's going to happen.
Also it's highly unlikely SCOTUS will grant immunity as it would give the sitting president immunity...and that would be Joe Biden.

(95,366 posts)...the Court has had multiple opportunities to do Trump personal favors and has never chosen to do so. They all have life tenure and don't owe him anything.
