Noem signed a bounty on Coyotes, after all and only bemoaned their likely depopulation/devastation when she saw a state legislator wearing a fur coat of their hides and wished for one herself.

Clever, adaptable, usually eat all the right things - mice, rats, etc.

But countless studies have shown that if you hunt coyotes, you do two things that both work against what the coyote-killers are saying that they are after.
1) you shoot the dumb ones...and even coyotes have dumb ones. That just educates the survivors to be more careful around humans.
2) you remove a predator from an area, and the food supply..mice, rats, etc... just multiplies. Other coyotes move into the territory to take advantage of the food supply.
Either way, you end up with a more numerous and intelligent coyote population.

What to do about them? I used to live in a very rural area, and I put hot wire..electric fence..around my chicken area. Then I tied bacon to the wire..when it was off, of course. The coyotes that came around... and their children and grandchildren will avoid the place like the plague.
An educated coyote is better than a dead coyote.
Read: "Don Coyote" by Dayton Hyde. While your at it, read any of the books by Rick McIntyre about the re-introduction of wolves to Yellowstone. "The Reign of Wolf 21" is a good start.

A really good book about them is "Coyote America" by Dan Flores. You will gain a whole new respect for them.

6. Coyotes are "peridomestic"..."peridomestic": wild animals whose population increase because of humans.

Other examples of peridomestic animals are: Racoons and white tail deer.

It's an interesting relationship we have with these wild animals.

I see a few coyotes around. They are elusive.

We used to have a den in a vacant lot behind our house. I loved their sounds.
One night my daughter got up all scared and said, "Mom there is a girl being attacked".
I told her it was the coyotes singing.
The lot is no longer vacant and I really miss their sounds.

Meanwhile, the whitetail deer population is exploding.
We didn't have deer in my neighborhood until recently. (I really do not want to hit a deer. )
I feel the deer population is exploding because the coyotes are gone.

I can see how coyotes can also be pests.

I don't know why they are gone from neighborhood.
There is a habitat about 1/3 mile away.
But I don't hear them anymore.

7. It is generally illegal to shoot a dog, but you can if they are threat.

Examples: Are self-defense.
Other case would be: inability to find a vet to put a sick animal down.
(At least this is the case in Texas. I assume the same in SD.)

However, she won't be charged because the statutes of limitations has very likely expired.
Also, she can claim the dog was dangerous and she was too far from a vet to have it put to sleep.

These laws are rarely enforced, except in the case of obvious animal cruelty.
In cases where there have been charges:

There are usually photos
Usually involves multiple animals.

But it's a good idea to keep this story in the media.
No one likes people who shoot dogs.

I wish this would have come out after Trump had chosen her!
