Are Presidents Above the Law?
by Robert Reich | April 27, 2024 - 6:09am

— from Robert Reich's Blog

snip//

Trump wants to turn the U.S. president into a supreme ruler — who is not bound to the same laws that everybody else is — the very antithesis of the bedrock values this country was founded on. A president shouldn’t be above the law.

In reality, this is all part of Trump’s plan to avoid accountability. He wants to gum up the legal system to delay his federal trial until after the 2024 election. If he really believed he was innocent, wouldn’t he want to have a trial as soon as possible?

Just as bad, the Supreme Court is abetting his plan by dragging its feet.

snip//

The Supreme Court can move quickly when it wants to. When Trump appealed Colorado’s decision to keep him off the state ballot, the Supreme Court rushed to get a ruling out before the Colorado primary. Shouldn’t the court move with the same urgency on Trump’s immunity claim? Otherwise, Trump’s January 6th trial may not be decided before the presidential election.

Voters are entitled to know before casting their ballots whether they are choosing a felon for president.

But they’d gleefully impeach and convict a Democratic president just for wearing a tan suit.

Back then, the GOP wanted justice and sided with law and order. Many were against Ford's pardon.

Some of them cared about law and the rest, while some were just as much party über alles as the current crop.

Most people don't know or don't remember all the nasty things GQP did back then to protect their guy. Example: Howard Baker was reporting every detail of the Senate Committee investigating Watergate to Nixon, for nearly all of his time on that committee. The media was later complicit in whitewashing his slimy maneuverings because they misinterpreted his 'what did he know and when did he know it?' query to John Dean. He was trying to establish that Nixon was unaware of what was happening, but it was Dean's answer that changed America forever. Not Baker's slithering apologia attempt.

I personally don't think he'll be elected. As an unelected former president, the civil and criminal trials will go on.

who knows nothing of the Constitution or what this country stands for?
What of the next crook, swindler or thief elected to office?
Are we just going to say they have the title, so they vare above the law?
DarnOld Trumpf was a con-man, swindler, birther, and thief before ever being elected.
And NOW we give him a pass because he has the title, though he swindled the 2016 election??

And when there are, every mob boss in the country will run for prez, to get immunity. The idea that presidents have immunity is absolutely antithetical to the American ideal, and abhorrent to our legal system.

When all this is over and buried in the pages of history, someone like Don Jr. or Eric can run for office at 66, and people will look at him adoringly as 'oh, he's the son of a former president', and vote him in, because of attention span in this country will wipe clean the horrifying things Trumpf is doing right now if he doesn't go to prison!

As Nixon. If he'd had a son, nobody would have voted for the fils, because the name has been poison since 1974. Few people in 1973 thought that would ever happen.

If we can win this election, I do believe that the TSF name will become equivalent poison. It's simply too hard for those of us today to see it happening down the road, because we're too close to the brouhaha now. Same as how people in 1973 couldn't foresee a day when Nixon's name was poison.

The Constitution provides for impeachment.
The House impeached and the Senate holds the trial.

A former president can be impeached for actions taken during it's term.

There's a reason the founders set it up that way.

Possibly do a little research on why the founders opted for impeachment.

20. Robert Reich: Hello? Did everyone forget what Trump was really like?
Sat Apr 27, 2024, 01:48 PM
Apr 27

a recent poll from The New York Times and Siena College caught my attention. It shows that nearly half of voters now say that the country was better off when Donald Trump left office than when he came in.

That’s a huge change since 2021, meaning a lot of Americans appear to have simply forgotten or blocked out just how bad the Trump years really were.

Hello? Did we forget double-digit unemployment? Or how the entire economy shut down while Trump told Americans to inject bleach? Or how he refused to leave office peacefully and incited a violent insurrection?

Americans are desperately in need of a refresher on how bad the Trump years really were.
