There was no indication that she was preferred before she was attacked. (In fact, Obama and Gov Patrick may well have discussed the Kerry seat.) Now, if Obama was genuinely undecided when his people leaked both names, he might feel he HAS to pick Rice.

has Kerry expressed ANY interest in leaving the Senate for ANY cabinet position? Everyone seems to have expressed an opinion on this except him!

He would've put a stop to it. I can't point to a specific time, but I have some vague remembrance that he's had his eye on a cabinet position for some time. He didn't make it in 2008, but he's been a favorite during the 2012 campaign season.
