So, is it possible that the opposition to Rice is an attempt to allow Kerry to vacate his Senate seat thus giving Brown a way back in?

(31,706 posts)...considering Gramps and Kerry are Vietnam Veterans and were good friends in the past, I would think McCain would most definitely favor his old pal as SOS over that "uppity" Rice woman. While moving Kerry to State or Defense would open up the Senate seat, I don't think Brown is such a given as people think. If he was so popular, he would have prevailed over Senator-elect Warren (that feels great to type that!) and I think a well funded and competent candidate (and there are several waiting in the wings) could beat Scotty as well. Nonetheless, it's a gamble and one I don't think the Senate Democrats or the DNC would look forward to.
A good part of what's happening here is an attempt to harass and push around this administration. It's another form of obstructionism and pandering to the Faux Noise and hate radio crowd. This takes the focus off the budget negotiations and other issues and helps rally the wounded ducks in the rushpublican party following the election night trouncing. If they can force President Obama to nominate Kerry over Rice then it'll be viewed on Bullshit Mountain as a great victory...

(2,404 posts)...an excellent synopsis. More in the "real" world. I particularly like the point that it is a way of rallying the wounded republicans. Sounds pretty dead on.

(27,315 posts)If anything, McCain's opposition to Rice insure his nomination, which is probably his goal with the hope he can transform her hearing in a circus on Benghazi (if not him as he is not on the SFRC, some other person on the committee).
This does not mean that Obama should name Rice else if he wants (sorry, I am no mind reader, so contrarily to others, I dont know who Obama wants to choose. As far as I am concerned, it could be Bill Clinton).
