Would you pay $7 for a single cup of coffee? Starbucks is banking on it. The chain recently introduced its most expensive coffee ever, Costa Rica Finca Palmilera, in 48 of its U.S. stores. Half of those stores are in Seattle.
Costa Rica Finca Palmilera is made from a rare coffee variety called Geisha, which is found in Central America and is famously difficult to cultivate. In addition to the $7 cups, Starbucks offers eight-ounce bags for $40. Made with Clover brewing machines, the stuff is only available in stores (sorry, drive-through customers).
Leslie Wolford, a green coffee specialist for Starbucks, talked up the coffee at a tasting event at a Seattle location. She described the taste as having the following attributes: "A little bit of pineapple. Herbal complexity. Super-clean. Vibrant. Sparklingness. ... Lush, tropical, hints of white, not yellow, peach."
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer's Seattle's Big Blog writes that the coffee, which is part of Starbucks' limited-edition, specialty "Reserve" line, is already proving popular. An online offering on Starbucks' website, although slightly different from the product sold in stores, sold out in 24 hours. ..............(more)

(37,364 posts)I heard an item on the news last week in which coffee was identified as one of the world's plants which will shortly become extinct as the result of climate change. Apparently the world's coffee crops need to be renewed periodically by introducing "matter" (not certain if graftings or pollens or what) from a wild coffee plant that grows in only one small location in the world. Apparently, climate change will make this area unsuitable to sustain this wild plant.

(2,097 posts)that Starbucks can't make a decent cup of coffee, period. Every other coffee chain here in DC makes better coffee than Starbucks (and the independent place around the corner from me does it even better than the chains). This is like McDonald's announcing they're going to serve a $7 Big Mac; it'd just mean they'd be ruining some kobe beef rather than their usual slop.

(20,176 posts)There's a bunch. My favorite is Qualia Coffee on GA Ave NW: roasted on premises, ground to order, brewed pour-through. Not cheap but worth every penny, Joel (the proprietor) is a master.

(2,097 posts)Opened in the last year or so. Great cup of coffee from some very friendly folks; unfotunately low on ambiance, though.

Their tea isn't good either.

(5,756 posts)If you put any sort of creamer or sweetener in the coffee you just really threw away $7.
I only go to Starbucks to get a mocha every once in a while as a treat and I think the $3+ cost of that is excessive. That's why it's a "treat" every once in a while and not my morning beverage.

(20,176 posts)we hate making them. The 'nog basically cooks itself into scrambled eggs on the sides of the pitcher and the rinse fountain won't take it out so we have to scrub them and wash the pitchers constantly.
On top of all that, they do taste awful. They are, along with the matcha powder, the thing I wished they'd just get rid of.

Didn't buy much Starbucks before that. I prefer the indepedent coffee stands. Better prices and better service.

(9,314 posts)declare the $7.00 for a cup of a special blend of coffee is ridiculous and a waste but would have no problem paying $7 or more for a glass of wine.
Yes, I'd give it a try - I love Starbucks coffee.

(1,975 posts)It wasn't a pleasant experience. Cold weather training, and a buddy offer me a cup in the steel cup that our canteen sits in. It was hot and I was freezing so I said sure. It was black & strong went down my throat and came back up threw my nose I was coughing so bad. Everyone got a good laugh and I've never touched the stuff since.
It drives my wife crazy, I love the way coffee smells, but can't bring myself to drink it again. Almost like trying to eat something that once gave you food poisoning.

(4,788 posts)except mine was during an all-nighter at college helping a friend to type her honors thesis. I love the smell of coffee and I love coffee ice cream (especially with hot fudge or pineapple toppings on it), but not to drink. I'm a tea person when it comes to abusing caffeine.
