So, John King gives Newt the chance to give his side of the story after another network dropped a bombshell -- that was a GIFT to Newt. Newt could have taken the opportunity to answer the charges in a dignified way and move on. Instead, Newt acted like an ass. And the SC Republicans loved him for it. Says something, eh?
Also: Once the bravado of the moment passes, Newt will find that he has given a week or more to what could have been a one-day story about his second divorce. Tactically, he screwed up in order to satisfy his ego and vent. That stuff may play well with South Carolina Republicans. Independents, however, will remember it as a tantrum. What an idiot.

(19,768 posts)He passed up that opportunity to put it all behind him, if he could, and got a strong response from the audience for attacking the media vs answering the question.
As the debate proceeded, his applause lines waned, some responses eliciting a deafening silence.
I see Newt coming in third, or fourth in SC.
His arrogance was on full display tonight, and I think quickly soured his support.

(26,117 posts)I was all set to disagree until I read your whole post. I was thinking that his antics would be exactly what conservatives would like (as you mentioned), but I didn't consider how his response would increase the longevity of the "open marriage" news story.
I hope you're right and he flames out after this.

(15,189 posts)He made John King look like the ass. Newt is a ticking time bomb, and I hope his fuse goes off real soon. He scares me more than Mittens. I hope the nominee will be Santorum. If they start fishing around K Street, he's gonna go down faster than Romney would. The old farts know Newt, and if they didn't like Bill Clinton, Newt is still their hero.

(12,287 posts)tactic again. Notice how he also told John King for him and his buddies to quit schilling for Obama and start reporting the news...CNN has never shilled for Obama, much less the ass wipe he was yelling at, so he's trying to push the "liberal press" stuff again. It usually works and now CNN will bend over even more for the GOP. If it were me and I was a reporter on CNN it would piss me off and I'd start really digging for something to bury him.

I think they really prefer Newt over Romney.

(6,837 posts)Independents and potential crossover Democrats will look at that and realize Newt is crazy.

(25,029 posts)Safe to say he doesn't give a fuck and neither do his would be voters.
I think he carries much more significant drawbacks than cheating, rank hypocrisy, and petulent responses for such.
His staggeringly poor temperament was vividly apparent many years ago.
His doggish ways no secret for a while but the reality is other than his dangerous impulsiveness the personal stuff is the very least of the problems with Gingrich. It is how he wants to screw the American people that is what is really vexing.
