I can imagine the following scenario....
1) He sticks to his guns and lets the tax cuts expire
2) come debt ceiling time ...he threatens Armageddon unless he gets his way..

If the Repubs try to use the debt ceiling Obama has the option of closing down and laying off many of the employees in the executive branch. Yes it will hurt employees, but it will also shut down many of the functions that everyday people take for granted. Obama will correctly claim that the Constitution requires him to pay our creditors first and that he can't spend money that congress has authorized if they don't provide him either the revenue or the authority to borrow. McConnell has an out, since he now knows that the Dems have the votes in the Senate to raise the debt ceiling (and impose the McConnell rule - which he had to filibuster after Reid decided to allow a vote on it calling McConnell's bluff). McConnell and the Senate Republicans can simply not filibuster it and then vote present, leaving no senate republican fingerprints. At that point it's all on Boehner and the TPe'er's. He can do things like lay off the airport controllers in all of the smaller markets (mostly affecting red states), shut down the national parks, stop payments to the states for things like medicare, stop federal subsidies for infrastructure construction, etc.. This will be painful, but if he explains to the American public that he is constitutionally required to pay our debt before anything else, the blame will fall squarely on Boehner and the Radical Reactionaries. It will get quite ugly for them very quickly. We have to stop the repeated attempts by the Radical Reactionaries to hold our nation hostage to their demands.
