(Reuters) - Imprisoned serial child sex offender Jerry Sandusky lives under tight restrictions for his own safety, a corrections official said on Saturday, after the former Penn State football coach asked for more prison privileges.
"He is being housed in the appropriate facility in order to assure his safety," said Susan McNaughton, press secretary for the Pennsylvania state Department of Corrections.
She responded to questions from Reuters after one of Sandusky's lawyers complained that his client was confined to his cell 23 hours a day.
"He's being treated like the worst of the worst in the state prison system in terms of his daily routine," attorney Karl Rominger said on Saturday.

It'd save the taxpayers a lot of money too.

Yes, he isn't a nice person, but the state has an obligation here.

I'm sure a few casinos would be willing to bet on how long he survives in genpop. I give him no more than 3 hours.

(62,325 posts)justice. He has been convicted and sentenced and is now away from where he can do any more harm.
It's astonishing how we do not hold up to the test of our own claims to being a civilized nation.
If vigilante 'justice' is what we want, then let's stop pretending we respect the rule of law.

(154,021 posts)This is why child abusers are put in essentially solitary, which in some ways s worst. But that is what prisons have to do...and matters little if they are famous or not.

(51,076 posts)He ruined many young boys lives, he is not someone I will care about.
If I'd been molested as a kid and the molester was still alive when I got older I'd been in jail for killing the bastid myself. I don't take molesting children lightly nor do I have one tear for those who do. Its not a question of what jerry sandusky did, it is a fact of what he did.
Please lets not get all about ourselves over something like this.

(154,021 posts)The court and a jury found him guilty of such. He was sentenced to prison, not death in prison. Ypu don't care that we have a legal system. Yes, you are getting over your need for revenge. Sorry if some of us are not willing to follow you into mob rule.
That is what you should care about. But perhaps we should stop pretending and just get rid of the pretension of a legal system and surrender to mob rule. It will make life that much better.
Suffice it to say, our court and legal system has many flaws, but you are asking to get completely rid of it to satisfy the basest of instincts.
For the record, some of my patients were underage, were gang raped and were sold into sexual slavery. I make sure you know this before you point out that perhaps I got no idea.
One of the people responsible for that was given 45 years. (No life sentence) and another 40 for drug offenses, effectively life. None felt sorry for him. But none would take the law into own hands.

(154,021 posts)And that is an important distinction.
Also he was given life in prison, not the death penalty...there is a difference. And the fact people are missing this is, quite frankly, astonishing.

(60,212 posts)but part of me thinks that hanging out for another 30 years in solitary would be a better punishment.
"Better" in this case meaning a lot crueler.
I don't think the justice system does a good job of punishing molesters. I want what's worst for him. He deserves to suffer.

(2,921 posts)and even though my cousin is far away (in another country, in fact), it was a tough thing for me - I still talk to my cousin from time to time, but never about the abuse.
I am not forgiving for child molesters, period.
Sandusky hid this for many years. He raped and molested probably hundreds of children through his foundation.
Putting him on gen pop is not death penalty itself, but a high number of inmates are fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, and may have been sexually abused as a child themselves. They are not forgiving, either.

(1,869 posts)Now, Sandusky is an awful criminal, but he deserves to be kept state by the prison authorities. The state has administered justice, we don't need any vigilante justice from other hard criminals, and it's really sad to see certain factions of DU advocate that type of behavior... disgusting.

(14,180 posts)principle.
Just as a point of reference, though, I'll wager that those on DU who have no problem with Sandusky being whacked in General Population had absolutely no problem with Osama bin Laden being extra-judicially executed either, nor with the kill lists Obama personally oversees and approves for his precious drones. These same DUers would be screaming bloody murder, were Bush in charge of the kill lists.
DUer EFerrari phrased the principle you articulate most excellently back in May of this year: "We treat evil men decently not because of who they are. We treat evil men decently because of who we are." I cannot find the thread where she said it to link but it has stuck with me ever since.
Oh, wait, you'll be accused of 'hand-wringing,' mark my words.

(17,003 posts)While it's probably true that he's not a flight or violence risk, he is being punished. Prison can be a rehabilitation enterprise but it's also intended to be a punishment. Sounds like he is being punished and will continue to be for a while.

(252 posts)Not here to debate questions of our legal system or whether rape is justified for a rapist but speaking as an old jailbird, Sandusky would be shunned in the yard and be beaten badly but probably not killed and back into solitaire for his own safety. He MIGHT survive if he can fight or is hard enough to use a weapon but I doubt it, he's got too many years on him. I think he's either really naive or as someone wrote earlier, angling for a less restrictive environment...
Separation
(1,975 posts)I have many friends that work in the prison system and I have asked them about this. The tales of child molesters/rapists being hunted in prison are just that, tales. Does it happen? Yes, but no more than any other prison violence. If he is moved out of solitary confinement he would be moved into a protective custody unit. These normally house, former gang members, snitches, and sexual offenders...which is why the violence on them doesn't happen as much as said. If a person does try to take him out it would probably be for the notoriety of killing a celebrity, not a child molester.

(20,214 posts)and he got killed with a broomstick in his eye socket. I just don't think Sandusky thinks what he did was wrong, therefore he thinks he would be safe in the general population. I think he really thinks he's just one of the guys.
