DENVER (AP) Marijuana for recreational use became legal in Colorado Monday, when the governor took a purposely low-key procedural step of declaring the voter-approved change part of the state constitution ...
Gov. John Hickenlooper, a Democrat, opposed the measure but had no veto power over the voter-approved amendment to the state constitution.
Hickenlooper tweeted his declaration Monday and sent an executive order to reporters by email after the fact. He told reporters he didn't want to make a big deal about the proclamation ...

(224 posts)and also a mental hospital. Marijuana has been shown to trigger schizophrenia in people who have predisposing genes. It should not be fucked with unknowingly. I don't care if somebody wants to smoke pot, but it is sick to spike people's food with it.

(48,181 posts)would you suggest the same punishment for spiking the punch?

(224 posts)link when there is so much evidence for it. I bet you are one of those "pot is not as bad as alcohol" people.

I have a sister who was given weed at 13, became majorly addicted, and is now on disability for scizophrenia and has been since age 30. Do not lecture me on your "pot is harmless and there is no proof it does harm" bullshit.

Marijuana Linked with Earlier Onset of Schizophrenia in Research Review
Many studies have linked marijuana use with early onset of psychosis. The question is, does smoking marijuana cause earlier psychosis? A new review of 83 studies involving more than 22,000 participants seeks an answer.
The meta-analysis found that people who smoked marijuana developed psychotic disorders an average 2.7 years earlier than people who did not use cannabis. But the review also found that people who used any illegal drug suffered psychosis two years earlier than non-users, not a large difference.
While alcohol use was not associated with early onset, the studies reviewed could not rule out the influence of cigarette smoking, which is a common habit of people with psychotic disorders and those who smoke marijuana. In many of the countries from which the data was gathered, in fact, cannabis is typically smoked mixed with tobacco. The researchers argue that cigarette smokingunlike marijuana does not worsen hallucinations or paranoia in patients with schizophrenia, so they believe that tobacco does not account for earlier onset.
. . . . . .
In the new review, researchers also cite studies linking a particular gene to sensitivity to cannabis, which could help explain why most marijuana smokers dont have a higher risk of schizophrenia, and why even many people with schizophrenia do not have earlier onset connected with cannabis use.
Still, none of the data linking marijuana use and psychosis can prove causality or sufficiently explain why rates of schizophrenia have remained stable or even declined since the 1950s, while marijuana use has increased exponentially. Unlike rates of cigarette smoking and lung cancer, which rise in tandem, marijuana smoking rates in the population do not correlate with higher rates of schizophrenia.

(113,546 posts)was linked through the huffpo one, it states that marijuana and other drugs speed up the onset, they do not cause it.
I am sorry about your sister, but, according to the research you yourself quoted, there were obviously some other things going on.

(224 posts)"Researchers in New Zealand found that those who used cannabis by the age of 15 were more than three times (300%) more likely to develop illnesses such as schizophrenia. Other research has backed this up, showing that cannabis use increases the risk of psychosis by up to 700% for heavy users, and that the risk increases in proportion to the amount of cannabis used (smoked or consumed). Additionally, the younger a person smokes/uses cannabis, the higher the risk for schizophrenia, and the worse the schizophrenia is when the person does develop it. Research by psychiatrists in inner-city areas speak of cannabis being a factor in up to 80 percent of schizophrenia cases."
Seriously, Niyad, I am sure your peeps in the marijuana industry had no say in the study. And you are not biased at all. And I do know people who have been killed by drunks in car accidents.
