Motorists’ Happy Honks as Man Saves Ducklings from Road

So many of us have encountered an animal trying to cross the road in traffic and it’s often a dangerous situation for the rescuer, particularly if there’s a hot-head nearby. But when a Pennsylvania man jumped out of his car to help a family of ducks cross the road alive, he learned that for every driver impatiently hollering out the window, there are a dozen others who are lending their support. Enjoy!

Written by Bill Roseberry of Pennsylvania

One sunny late spring day I was driving on a local busy highway and stopped at a traffic light. A woman pulled up on my left with three children in the car and was slightly ahead of me. To the right was a largish commercial truck. I was startled when the children reacted to a mother duck and her brood that had wandered into the roadway. Not knowing what the commotion was about at first, I got out of my car and looked in front. There the brood was with about nine ducklings. Their fate was sealed if they didn’t hurry back to the side of the road. There was no way across all the lanes of traffic in 2 directions in the time allotment for the light and nothing on the other once arrived, so I quickly looked at the kids and their mother, who had a worried expression on her face as she looked at those ducklings and their mother.

Thinking fast, I herded the babies and their mother back in the direction from which they had come. There were a couple of small water retention ponds that always seemed to have water in them not too far away. I had to stay back a bit as they were hovering around Mom and she was all over the place trying to get away form me. Squawking and quacking furiously, she was frightening the young birds. I didn’t want them to panic and spread out! That would surely be the end. The children were crying in the background, adding another level of distraction when the trucker to my right shouted, “C’mon, they’re just ducks!”

I stopped and observed, “Tell those kids and their mother your going to run them over then.”

driving home from work I watched someone escorting some ducklings across a busy, six-lane road with a 55mph posted speed limit.
