Irish bookmaker Paddy Power today shortened the odds on Barack Obama serving a second term as US President from 8/11 to 4/6.
The decision to tighten the odds came less than 24 hours after the bookmaker announced it was paying out on Mitt Romney as the Republican nominee but also came after a spectacular performance from President Obama at a fundraiser in the historic Apollo Theater in Harlem.
The President wowed crowds on Thursday night when he broke into Al Greens Lets Stay Together displaying once more the relaxed and charismatic nature that captivated voters in 2008.
Paddy Power said: Were calling it the Al Green effect. We cant get the song out of our heads after seeing the video of him at the Apollo. Policies are important but so too is the ability to move and motivate people and Obama does that effortlessly.

I'm lovin' it.

(8,571 posts)well at first I was in shock that he could sing too
Then came the "oh my, I really, really need to hear that again...and again...and again"
Then I ran to my husband who was in bed and said "OMG I'm in love!" he's like what? I said President Obama just sang Al Green "Let's Stay Together".
Then came the disappointment, after playing it a gazillion times...I wanted more and more. I want him to do the whole song, and by golly gee if he doesn't do it...I'm going to be one pissed off voter come November. I might just have to write in a heart and call it a day right after I mark the bubble next to his name

(86,004 posts)haters and folks who have made the guy out to be some kind of monster won't understand this, but it's about identifying with this generation. No President has been closer to the people in my lifetime. If I had to pick one who was close, it would have to be Lincoln in his time.
And, I like the message . . . let's stay together. Perfect pitch and tone.

(34,179 posts)The ongoing killing of innocents, the ongoing destruction of our civil liberties, the permanent downgrading of the American dream, yes, let's give all of that a pass because hey, that President can sing!
The American Idolization of American politics. Doesn't matter what you do, just so long as you are charismatic, are easy to connect to, the common people want to have a beer with you, or you can carry a tune.
A sad statement, truly.

(269,103 posts)Last I checked this is still Democratic Underground - do I like Obama's foreign policy - NO- but every American President is a hawk. I'd rather have Obama than any ReTHUG

(34,179 posts)"You can always vote for Gingrich or Romney", but simply can't, or won't address the points I'm making.
Funny also how you assume that every American president is a hawk, as if by virtue of that "they all do it" mentality, the ongoing slaughter of innocents is OK. It isn't, it should be changed. But hey, this hawk of a president sings, so I guess that makes all that blood more palatable, right?
Sorry, but I don't play American Idol politics, the game is far too serious for that. Does that sentiment mean that I want a 'Pug, no. But neither do I want a corporatist, center-right president who says he is a Dem, but governs somewhere to the right of Eisenhower. That is not how we bring about change in this country.

(8,571 posts)Funny how you immediately jump to a thread about a harmless little song that was all in fun. Does every thread have to get negativity thrown at it? I am really tired of every thread resorting to negativity between posters on the board, whether it be a critique of the President or something good that he has done that he isn't getting credit for.

(11,101 posts)Wasn't that W's line? Is it not possible to have serious policy issues with the administration and our own party and still acknowledge that it was a good moment for the President? You give no merit at all to a leader's ability to connect with people. Yet one of our many complaints about Mitt Romney is that he "comes across" as phoney and out of touch. It doesn't have to be "all or nothing" in politics. In fact, if it is, you are in for a life of bitter frustration. A little nuance never hurt anybody.
